A magnet for skiers and hikers, these dramatic peaks – including the iconic Matterhorn – range from 3,000 to 15,000 feet and spread across three-fifths of the country. Abundant glaciers, scenic valleys and gorgeous alpine lakes add to the region's visual appeal. The Glacier Express train travels the 7.5-hour route through the Swiss Alps from Zermatt to St. Moritz, passing through fairy-tale villages and over 291 bridges along the way.

Stayed here for one night over Christmas 2016. Some reviews said this hotel wasn't easy to find, but if you know the house number and have a good map, that won't be an issue - it is a 5 minute walk uphill from the station, directly on the main street, Rue du Village, in the same building where Le Nord restaurant is. Indeed there is no clear sign (Christine, who runs the place, later told us this is being worked on), however we opened the right door on first attempt. Check-in was easy, albeit the lady who greeted us certainly wanted to communicate in French. We stayed in the smallest of their 4 rooms, but it was of adequate size for us. Appreciated the wooden interior, design features, the bed and linen are all superb. It was cold outside, but the room was very warm. Breakfast is served from 8:30am and is plentiful - there is no buffet, it is all brought to your table. Christine is a charming and memorable lady, she set the tone for the entire day.

Stripped down accomodation, perfect for young people on a budget. Long, steep walk from downtown. The house must have had a lovely view over the lake but Lugano is now outrageously developed and built.

Chalet design in an idyllic setting Located on the mountain side, in the hamlet of Biolley, the chalet benefits from a clear view on the alps and the villages below. This cottage was totally renovated in 2013 on the basis of an old barn-stable.
