I visited the place in February with my 76 year old mom. Actually she saw the picture of the place and wanted to be there. In short the area is magical. We did not do any hikes due to my mom's age. Most of the time was spent in the glass covered balcony looking at the hills, jungle and birds. It was cold, cloudy and rainy - only a peek of Kanchenjunga one morning - but still loved the place. There are stairs, but these are not very high, So, seniors are able to do it unless they have walking problem. We were in Besra - trees do obstruct some views, but that is best considering optimum use of stairs. The cottage was clean, room heater and geyser provided - there can be power cuts and this place is remote. But the staff provided hot water bags, morning tea and were ready to provide warm water for morning if still no power. The food is awesome, and the staffs feed you like you are a guest in their family. The owner of the property also talks to you like you are a family member. If time permitted, my mom and I would have taken a weeklong doing nothing vacation here.

My wife, son, and her parents and I spent four days early January at the Sundarbans. From the first email to our last send off, Mr C S Paul and rest of the staff was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable about local flora and fauna and did everything possible to make our visit comfortable, special, and worth remembering. Food was simple but fresh and very tasty. Mr Krishno our local guide was very good as was the crew on the boat which became our home for three days on the water. The Mangroves are a uniquely special place and we got to see a large number of crocs, kingfishers, egrets, eagles, boars and even fresh tiger pug marks ! We were picked up in Kolkata by Mr Paul and dropped off at our hotel in Kolkata. He was an amazing individual with a wealth of knowledge about the area and why he decided to do this post retirement. My family had a really nice and relaxing time at the Sundarbans. A great visit to visit, enjoy, and commune with nature and the Sundarbans Jungle Camp is highly worth it. Thanks. Sunder Ramaswamy.

After having breakfast at Holong, we took the Madarihat road and started at about 11AM for Dhupjhora Elephant Camp. The drive was about 2 hours through a combination of good and bad roads – partly Asian Highway, partly National Highway and partly under construction road. The place is closer to Lataguri area and it should have been covered along with Lataguri tourists options. As we had booked for Holong and got Batabari stay option the very next day but we did not like the idea of staying in Batabari and wanted to explore Dhupjhora Elephant camp (commonly known as Gachhbari or Tree House locally or Gorumara Elephant camp) as it was opened by Forest dept. for booking after Feb 16, 2022. Dhupjhora camp is surrounded by jungle in one side, river in another and tea gardens in all other sides. The place has almost zero noise level and you hear only the sound of birds everywhere. After checking into our rooms, we wanted to look around the place. This is an elephant camp where tourists are exposed to elephant bathing, elephant ride (if you book online), feeding elephants, etc. The camp provides all meals as there are no options of going out for food. They charge 1800 for 2 persons which includes all meals, a tribal performance in the evening at the camp, some souvenirs of jute products manufactured by local women in the June center within the property. We had booked our elephant safari on online basis from wbfdc website from 4.30PM to 5.30PM and here one elephant carries only 2 tourists. During our Elephant Safari, we did not see much except one wild boar, sambar deer, Indian gaur, peacock, etc. but it was a good ride in the jungle. The food was prepared by locally employed female cooks and they prepare excellent meals for the tourists. Tea / coffee and snacks are provided by the kitchen caretaker Pradip. He also guides you for birds in the area. After lunch, we opted to take some rest and at about 3.30PM, we were called to visit the river nearby for elephant bathing experience. On our return from there, we faced some amount of trauma as suddenly one elephant coming back from the bath went wild / berserk and luckily it rant straight towards the nearby tea garden while we were coming from the rive side and it crossed our path marginally. We found many birds in this area – yellow nape woodpecker, pigmy woodpecker, leaf birds, sun birds, hill myna, black headed Oriole, magpie, peacocks, fan tailed drongo, etc. The evenings are very pleasant. The tribal dance was also enjoyable. As we were the only tourists there, it was a short program of Jhumur dance. The rooms are comfortable. Hot water is provided in buckets. After breakfast, we visited the Jute products workshop where the forest dept. trains local women to make Jute products like bags, mats, carpets, essence sticks, etc. A small buying by the tourists can help these local women to earn a dignified living. It was good visit.

We booked the Cottage (2 rooms) for our overnight stay in March 2022. The Cottage is located just outside the Camp premises. The Camp have a few Cottages and tents but it was not ready when we visited the area. Two Cottages with 4 rooms (each cottage has two rooms and one common sitting room with sofas) are located outside the camp and were functioning (camp was almost closed as other rooms and tents were not ready) and another family had booked 2 rooms in the cottage. The place is inside the forest area and you will hear chirping of birds most of the time. The place is very quiet and mornings are very calm. We saw quite a few birds near the river on which the hanging bridge is located. Also, we could see a few birds inside the River camp premises as more trees are located in the camp compound. No choice for food if you stay here. You can go out to the market for food but you will need a vehicle for the same or walk for 15/20 minutes. The food is cooked by the security guard. The rooms are well kept and clean. the bathroom is also very clean and well maintained. The forest dept. owns the place and tourists can book using the portal of the forest dept. We enjoyed our stay.

Stayed here for 2 nights during the month of Sept 2019. The 4 cottages they have built in place of the tents are specious and well ventilated with a separate dressing area apart from the bathroom. The place is by the side of the stream, in Sept, it was in full flow. The resort compound itself is an extension of the surrounding forest with tall trees and different kinds of orchids. The canteen churns out delightful Bengali meals and their chicken momos were delicious as well. Word of caution : If you are looking for a jazzy place offering selfie opportunities and shopping experience, this place and its surroundings, unfortunately, are not for you.
