Aldea Huasteca

Eco-touristic Accommodation on the Micos bank (Ciudad Valles), a perfect spot if you want to discover the Huasteca Potosina and all the natural activities of the area. Indeed, our hotel is located at the heart of the Huasteca, in a huge natural environment very close to the « Sierra de la Colmena » jungle, next to Micos River and only 20 minutes away from the facilities of a city (Ciudad Valles). Come and enjoy staying in one of the bungalows whose architecture and eco-technics are friendly to the environment. The construction materials of each one of the bungalows ( palm, bamboo, marble,...) as well as their color create a perfect atmosphere to make you feel integrated in nature. Don'tt stop dreaming and come to relax in our steam Prehispanic bath... this place will really help purifying your body and mind. You can also try one of our massages... just lie down, relax, listen to the sounds of the waterfalls and birds and let the masseur look after you.

Small village feel with emphasis on quiet and natural

Only 20-25 minutes from Ciudad Valles but it feels like going back in time. Somewhat of an eco-hotel along the beautiful and easy to swim Micos River. Beautiful tranquil quiet spot with excellent and plentiful buffet style food. On one night, my tour returned way past dinner time and they kept some food out for me. Each ‘bohio’ = hut (bamboo, stones, and thatch roof) is named after a local butterfly, bird, or legend. Your key holder has the same beautiful name and picture to match. The landscaping, although young, is well designed and maintained. They offer sweat lodges (for a minimum of 4 people). They offer massages. They also have a small store for things you may need (water socks, sunblock, hats, etc.). Each night the pathways are lit by torches, keeping things more natural looking. The staff is super friendly. I stayed here a week and met about 17 of the guides and none spoke English, so I am not sure how truly available that is (as another reviewer mentioned). Thankfully I speak fluent Spanish, so it wasn’t an issue for me. Only the second night was a bit of a nightmare as some folks decided to have a drunken party by the river and they were very loud (music, singing, and screaming) well until 6am. It could be heard from all huts. Not a peaceful night. It would have been nice if the staff dealt with this for the benefit of all other guests. Still a great place to be - I would happily return

Cabanas El Refugio del Sol

Wonderful Oasis

Reviewed By David M

We stayed two nights in this wonderful location. We were given El Aire an extremely spacious cabaña with a vaulted brick roof and a jacuzzi bath in the bedroom. The Cabanas which are all individual are set in a former orange grove and the scent of orange blossom was heavy in the air. It is family run and nothing was too much trouble. The only shame was that as we were using it as a base to visit friends we had too little time to enjoy the ambience and all the amenities. We did visit nearby Media Luna which is also stunning. We would love to come back with friends to enjoy this unique experience. Dave & Anj from the UK

Beware of scams/upcharges as tourist

This has been my worst experience at a hotel in Mexico so far, I’m confused why the reviews are so positive. And I have *VERY* low expectations and rarely rate places poorly- so I want to put that out there up front. I called Casa Caracol and asked how much it would be for one person for the night. She (a girl named Consuela) told me 400 pesos. I checked how much I had in cash just in case they didn’t take credit cards (because I forgot to ask while we were on the phone). I had a little more than $400 pesos left though, so I’m good. I get there and Consuela shows me the “tipi”- and it is…. Very literally… a tipi. With nothing in it but 2 beds. Cool… like I said I’m not picky. So I say that I’ll take it, we go upstairs to reception for me to pay. She says it’s $450 pesos. I say “oh, it’s not 400?” She says no. At that moment I have to decide whether it’s worth a whole confrontation for $50 pesos. I ask if they take cards and she says no. Which is strange to me because I see the little black terminal that they use for credit card transactions sitting on the desk. I tell her I only have $400 pesos unless they take cards. She says they don’t take cards, and it’s $450 pesos. I “find” the extra 50 pesos, almost the last of my cash which means I’ll have to go to an ATM and pay a fee to get out more. She tells me breakfast is included and that she will be by my tipi in a few minutes with my receipt and with the wifi code (I had asked her for it once or twice already because I’m traveling alone and my parents haven’t heard from me in awhile). I’m waiting to change and get into bed because I don’t want to be mid changing and they come by… so I’m just waiting. She doesn’t come. All of a sudden a HUGE spider comes out and is making its way toward my bed. I have their phone number so I call, no one answers. Finally a very helpful guy comes by to put the sheets on one of the beds and gets the spider out. I told him she never came by with the wifi and HE goes and gets the wifi that she writes down on a piece of paper for me. Finally - almost 2 hours later- I can change and get into bed and tell my parents I’m alive. I get into bed, go to put in the wifi…. It’s not the correct password. I finally give up and go to sleep. I go to breakfast today for the free breakfast and the guy asks for my receipt. I tell him the girl never gave me my receipt even though she said she would. He tells me he needs to check that my stay includes breakfast. He comes back and says that stays of $300 pesos don’t include breakfast. Only ones of $400 pesos. I tell him that’s interesting because I actually paid 4*50* pesos. He says to let him go check again. Meanwhile all this time I’m waiting and not getting breakfast. And I’m thinking about how this girl straight up lied to me about the price and about what I paid, and I’m getting legitimately angry. An unusual thing for me but it’s not about the money even- it’s that I don’t like being taken advantage of. So when the server comes back again he says they are still checking, but she says I paid 300 pesos. So I say to him, “so clearly that means that the tipis are supposed to be $300 pesos and she overcharged me because I’m a tourist, and he said sorry and agreed with me. Again I’m waiting…. And I see the guy from last night who killed the spider. I ask him for the name of the girl who was in reception and he tells me it’s Consuela. I told him what happened and he also apologized. I asked him if they only accept cash or if they also accept cards and he says they do accept credit cards. I tell him about how she told me they don’t take cards and only cash, and told me that he doesn’t know why she would say that and apologizes again. I ask who is higher up for me to talk to about this and he goes to get someone. He gets Daniel, who is helpful but overall I’m still disappointed in how this was handled (as of now, we’ll see if they fix it when Consuela comes in today which is what I was told). He asks what happens and I tell him everything- detail by detail. I think it’s pretty obvious I know exactly how much I paid by the details I give. He apologizes again and says that this shouldn’t have happened and he’s so sorry and the breakfast will be free. (I’m not worried about the breakfast honestly it’s just how all this has gone down but cool, I mean they did say it was included). So then I ask Daniel if they do in fact take cards and he says yes. I tell him about how she said they only take cash. Again he apologizes. I said that I think it’s only fair that they charge me the rate that it SHOULD be, and let me pay by card like I wanted to and give me back my cash because I don’t have a lot of cash and I need it. And I should have been allowed to pay with a card to begin with. He says that they can’t do that because it was in the books already but that they can let me take out cash there. That doesn’t solve the problem for me because I don’t think I should have to pay cash when I was lied to, and I should be able to pay with my card. And the “books” are clearly wrong anyway because she said that I paid $300 pesos when I paid $450 pesos and kept the rest of it. So wouldn’t the whole transaction have to be done properly and all over again??? He said that they wouldn’t be able to give me any money back because that’s how much the tipi is with breakfast. I said… that’s not what he said (pointing to my server) and what he said (the guy who killed the spider). So he goes to the server and says to him kinda quietly “how much is the tipi with breakfast?” And he responds $400 pesos. Then the woman that was next to him says “yes it’s 400 pesos with breakfast.” So he walks back to me and says “it’s 400 but then because of your dog that makes it 450.” Now I’m getting pissed again because while he was helpful in the beginning- now he’s lying to me and doing the exact same BS…. I know very well it’s not the fee for the dog because I ASKED if there was a charge for the dog when I called. So I tell him just that- I specifically asked when I called if they allow dogs and then how much is the fee for the dog and she said that for the tipi there’s no fee, but if I stay in an actual room there is a fee for the dog. So for him to say that now is just BS. If there was a fee for the dog that’s fine but I asked and they said there wasn’t so just accept responsibility and fix the situation- don’t just start making up crap to cover this up. By this point I’m so frustrated I’m about to cry so I just leave it at that. He said Consuela is coming in this afternoon and he would talk to her and see what they can do. I will update this review with how and if it was resolved, but as of now I’m very sad at how this all went down. I speak fluent Spanish, I always try to be not a stereotypical American traveler and make problems, hence why at each turn earlier I just let things slide. But also it’s not okay to take advantage of people, tourists or not. It’s not okay to blatantly lie to people. Not just Consuela, but also Daniel. There may in fact be a fee for dogs- but *I* was told there was no fee and him just making that up because 2 people said right In front of me that yeah it’s actually supposed to be $400 pesos (and I speak Spanish so I understood) and trying to cover was not okay. I’m exhausted from all the confrontation and it just truly made my stay awful from beginning to end. If you’re an American/tourist who doesn’t speak Spanish- I would TRULY caution you against staying at this place. I’ve stayed at so many places with really honest and helpful people. I loved Camino Surreal in Xilitla, and they treated me with honesty and respect. I hope this is resolved so I can update my review with better news.
