The best available Campgrounds to stay near New York

April 19, 2023 Trinity Boughner

New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

Perfect NYC Getaway

This location is as unique and restful as they promised. My “room” was a tiny house with the Statue of Liberty practically in my “backyard”. The accommodations were luxuriously comfortable. The food delicious, and the service team was there when you needed them, but not in your face. It is a treat well worth the very short ferry trip from Manhattan.

Firelight Camps

At Firelight Camps, we bring you an elevated camping experience with graceful safari tents that are furnished with hardwood floors, king or queen beds, and include a private balcony. Located on the grounds of La Tourelle Hotel and Spa, our guests share access with August Moon Spa and can dine at John Thomas Steakhouse. We provide a complimentary breakfast and wine hour around our nightly campfire.

Overpriced Parking Lot.....but it has potential.

Reviewed By JessZoladz

The campsite sits directly behind a 3-star hotel. The parking lot for Firelight is an old tennis court. My husband and I stayed in Tent #1 which is adjacent to the parking lot. "Quiet hours" are between 11pm - 8am. We could hear cars doors closing and people coming and going at night. We could hear the garbage truck from the hotel very LOUDLY at 7:20am. The tents are VERY close to each other. The tent adjacent to ours was a two-queen tent. We were woken by small children both mornings at 6:20am. Having left our kiddos behind, we were hoping to at least sleep until 8am. When we booked, there was a 2-nigh minimum, however we met several people who were only there for one night. All other tents besides tents 1 and 2 had a stone path leading to the entrance. The walkway was muddy from golf cart tracks. The bathrooms and showers are nice. Most are stalls, but there are a couple that are separate. Before checkout, the separate bathrooms were being cleaned, so I showered in a stall then went to comb and dry my hair in the mirrored area. The staff member then came into the mirrored area and started cleaning around me, hovering and waiting. This was all before checkout and was rather intrusive. Housekeeping is suspended "because of COVID" Breakfast was lovely. The hiking trail that connects to Buttermilk Falls was very convenient. Overall location is nice (far enough away but easy to get elsewhere in the area). Not sure why they put some tents next to the parking lot and all of them SO CLOSE to each other.

Woodstock Their Way

Reviewed By for-the-journey

One cannot argue that Woodstock Way is a beautiful place to stay. The rooms are decorated to soothe the soul and the surrounding grounds are spectacular. One does pay a premium price to stay in such beautiful surroundings however the problem is that the managment and staff fall very short of the quality of the physical environment. The downside of our stays have been a consistent sense that the place should be renamed “Management’s Way or Woodstock Our Way”. There is a consistent sense that guests at Woodstock Way are merely intruders that will most likely do something wrong, break a rule or try to get away with something. It feels like the opposite of hospitality - like there is a mistrust and some very forced polite, insincere conversation, but a general sense that guests are an inconvenience that must be tolerated. We find ourselves wishing that management’s style more closely reflected the serenity of the physical spaces. They just consistently miss the mark. We switched to a wonderful rented cottage, got a 5 star rating as guests and thoroughly enjoyed Woodstock OUR Way during our last stay, which also cost mush less, just up the street from Woodstock THEIR Way.

Tough to get a full hook up site

1000 trail member great because it is free. I do not think it is worth $80 night. over 125 season sites and probably 35 99 year leases sites. Any problems the answer is yes but they never get around to it. The rally field rest room smells so bad of septic that it is not unusual to see it pumped out twice in one weekend. Usually not done till someone complains. The water is sulfer but treated with chlorine when it is working. The parents let the kids run wild even though some are as young as 2 years old. The security ends at 11 PM so people party (LOUD) all night. We go thru managers like people go thru used cars. During the week it is a little quieter because most people just drop their campers and use only on weekends which is against the un enforced rules. The pool is nice if you can get a table with an umbrella. One thing for sure if you are a non member a salesman will be at your door. Mike the un called security guard is our best PR Man he will go out of his way to help you. It is a shame there are not more employees that are like him. so if you are a 1000 Trail member you can not beat it for free, if not spend your $80 elsewhere will you will have a good time and a good memory. Member since 1996. A little advice what you buy today and what is promised may change tomorrow or sometime in the future.

Magical Place

Reviewed By courtneyrose111

I stayed at Orenda with my family twice this Summer - in June and again in early September. Both visits were fun, restorative and deeply relaxing. The owners seem to genuinely love nature, while also catering to the ease and enjoyment of their guests. The food is delicious, the fire is always going, and the atmosphere is relaxed, yet incredibly thoughtful (fluffy towels, lovely soaps, tons of board games, blankets and snacks available in addition to everything you need to explore the area). We hiked, boated, mountain biked and spent time just being in nature and with each other, relatively unplugged and increasingly tuned in. PS: You'll find berries growing along the path to the cabins - nice addition to breakfast. Also, the owner's dog, Toby, is a sweetheart. Can't wait to return.
