Just two hours north of London by rail, the city of York holds 1900 years' worth of history in its ancient walls. The Romans built the city in 71 AD, and the Vikings captured it in 866 AD. Stop by the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens for a look at what the Roman and Vikings left behind (they must have packed light when they left). From there, move on to the York Castle Museum for a not-so-quick overview of the most recent 400 years.

The Bar Convent is England's oldest living convent, established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the Grade I Listed building is one of York's most unique places to stay, promising peace, quiet and friendly service in a heritage setting. Our rooms are largely en-suite, with a few lower-priced rooms on the top floor with shared bathroom facilities. There is an award-winning café on site, as well as an state-of-the-art Exhibition on the convent's fascinating history. Just around the corner from York Rail Station, and only minutes into the centre of town, The Bar Convent's location is second-to-none and provides easy access to the city's famous walls. A large number of restaurants, pubs and bars are nearby. The Bar Convent is proud to provide York's warmest welcome, to those of all faiths and none.
The Bar Convent is in a fantastic location for visiting York City and is very reasonably priced!! I was staying in room 305, which is in the attic. The room was very nice, but on two nights I heard a noice, which sounded like someone pacing the room. The noice could have been from the room next door or a sister from the past looking over me? After informing the sisters, they moved me to a larger room on the second floor with a double bed and on suite, with no extra charge. My full breakfast was amazing!! I asked how they kept it so hot, they said it was from an old tradition that was top secret!! The sisters can’t do enough to make your stay as perfect as they are!!

Standing next to York Minster, the Guy Fawkes Inn was the birthplace of the notorious plotter, Guido Fawkes. The Inn offers en-suite rooms with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV’s and AA Rosette Food. Each of the thirteen rooms have been decorated individually, feature antique feature, tea/coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries. Many of the rooms also enjoy a landmark view. The inn retains many of its original features including gas lighting, real log fires and the timber staircase. You can also dine by candlelight in the restaurant, which serves classic pub-food from locally sourced ingredients and the bar stocks a range of real ales. Absolutely gorgeous hotel situated across the road from York minster. Nothing was too much to ask for from the staff and I can't thank Harriet enough for all her effort and kindness towards myself and my friend. Our room was so beautiful and was situated in the courtyard. So comfortable and had everything we needed. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and I can't recommend the pie enough it's so worth it. Choice of drinks is fab too and seating areas so comfortable and warm. Breakfast was so tasty and lots to choose from and nothing was too much to ask. Overall if I could give more then a rating of ten I would. It was my first time in York and we will back again for Christmas, but definitely to the Guy Faukes hotel. Thank you so much guys.

My husband and I have just spent 3 lovely nights at the Alcuin Lodge guest house in York. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by our host, Darren, who proved to be unfailingly helpful and kind. The Lodge is located in a quiet street and is just a short walk from the historic centre of York. There is free permit parking in the same street. The accomodation was spotlessly clean and well cared for. Our room (no 4) was beautifully presented and decorated to give a light and airy atmosphere. The bed was very comfortable with super soft bed linen. The ensuite bathroom was immaculate. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided in the room and each day we received a tin of home baked treats, which were a lovely surprise. Breakfast which was ordered online the day before was well presented and plentiful with a variety of choices. We chose traditional English Breakfasts which were cooked to perfection. The Alcuin Lodge is a beautiful guest house in a quiet area, we would highly recommend it. Darren was a wonderful host who worked so hard to make our stay one to remember. We would most certainly stay there again.

We booked this hotel for one night and chose it mainly for its location and very reasonably priced rates. And it was a very pleasant experience. Staff were extremely welcoming and efficient and we checked in quickly. Our room was very clean, had everything we needed and the mini bottle of Prosecco was a lovely touch. The bed was very comfortable for my husband but possibly a little too hard for me (room 2) with good quality linens and pillows. Ideally located with just a short walk to the Minster and all the best bars and restaurants, we would definitely recommend.

Victorian guesthouse with 12 en-suite bedrooms of character, award winning breakfasts and private car park.
Nice smart clean Bed & Breakfast. Very traditional decor, but the fixtures and fittings are very well maintained, the room I was in was comfy with a modern shower room Breakfast was cooked fresh, and the buffet part was more than I was expecting. It’s location in. 15-20 walk in to the heart of York City Centre. If I had one negative comment was, yes they welcome pets, but was surprised to see a dog in the dining area while eating breakfast.

300 Year old cosy Hotel Central position. Short 2 minute walk to all main attractions. Minster 300 yds, museum gardens across the road. Owner managed. Train station and bus station 10 minute walk.
We stayed for 2 nights in room 6. Booked direct on line and was impressed with the email reply we got with all the pertinent information for checking in. Some parking at rear but huge car park very close by with plenty of spaces when we stayed. Quick walk from station. Easy to find and check in was a doddle - walk in and collect your key! Room was fab - 2 single beds in one room and a kingsize in the other - great mattresses! Tea/coffee etc in room. Great shower room, looked to be newly fitted. Breakfasts were lovely, delivered to room. Can recommend yoghurt with granola and compote, and the pastries and hubby enjoyed the bacon roll. Lovely guest lounge with tea, coffee, cake bars to help yourself to and loads of books and games. Quick walk across the museum gardens and you're in the middle of York, but nice quiet location. Staff that we met were really friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Plus, cracking pub next door!
