on all of my West Sumatra motorcycle road trips so far, i had never really visited the town of Padang, preferring to use the bypass road on my way to the southern side of this amazing west coast... towns are not my favourites, being usually hot & crowded... but this time i decided to bite the bullet, for the sake of checking the old town of Padang, with its rich history and exceptional heritage display... and for this, what better base camp to choose, but the town's oldest operating hotel: Hotel Padang! this hotel has the charmingly obsolete look of Indonesian accommodation dating from the colonial times,... it is well located, halfway between the old and the newer areas of town, a single storey goup of buildings on spacious and green grounds... i got room number 1, which has been tastefully renovated recently, with all modern amenities and nice veranda seating; the iron horse got a safe shelter too, a specific motorcycle parking area, under a roof... service staff are relaxed and friendly... breakfast is included in the reasonable room rate... bank atm, convenience store, laundry, cafés & warungs are all within walking distance... and to visit the touristy spots, nothing beats GoJek rides, which always ended up to be around Rp.10k... i would have been happy to give Hotel Padang a 5-dot rating, for the pleasant experience i had... but i still feel that the 4-dot should work better, as a motivation to make the small improvements that will lead this place to classical perfection...

We spent two nights here either side of a three day visit to Siberut, the hotel is just a short walk from the fast ferry terminal. Had an enjoyable stay on both nights with comfortable beds, good showers and excellent wifi. Ate in the restaurant, the food was good. The hotel looked after some of our luggage whist we were away and the friendly staff helped us make arrangements for transport on to Kerinci. Overall a great stay, thanks!

?Lake Toba, Indonesia For ONLY Rm 100 one-way ( KL - Lake Toba) and Rm 50/night in Romlan Guesthouse, Lake Toba was perhaps one of the most memorable and AFFORDABLE holidays I've shared with Michelle. ?Picture swimming in an enchanting volcanic blue lake that spans the horizon, with mountainous backdrops and blue skies, feasting on produce from rich volcanic soil and an abundance of the freshest fish, sleeping without the need of air-conditioning due to the cool temperatures.. That's Lake Toba in a nutshell.. The perfect holiday, with the best of culinary delights and fruit juices all from this incredibly rich and fertile land.. ?We spent our days just frolicking in the cool waters, gliding on the lake with our kayaks (it was FREE), having a gastronomic adventure that spanned from authentic German pastries to incredible Indonesian flavours. Apparently, the owner of Romlan's Guesthouse is a German, thus explaining the amazing German cuisine whipped up by the local chefs. The Fish 'Tombur' with their signature Spicy Batak Sauce was a KILLER. I have not found a better tasting spicy sauce than that (this dish takes 3 hours to prepare). ?Arriving to our destination was relatively easy. On our flight, we were already able to view the entirety of Lake Toba from above; it was breath-taking. A three hour drive from the airport would bring you the jetties, in which a ferry will take you DIRECTLY to your appointed hotel, all in the middle of the lake at an island called Samosir Island. It is for certain that I will return to this magical retreat. It's the ideal picture of the perfect retreat.

Not sure how to rate this.. as it was the only reasonably priced accomodation in the area which doesn't see a lot of western turists so obliviously the standards are different. We paid 16€ for a night and 100 000 idr for the motirbike for a day (which is a lot in indonesia). The staff was very nice and tried their best speaking english and helping us, they even drove us to a restaurant at very late.. many thanks for you! Well the room had no window, stains in walls and air freshner all the way to a great migraine. Lots of spider webs here and there.. wifi wasn't availible in the higher floors so not in our room. Only indonesian breakfast. Bed was good and enough hot water for that and the staff i give 3 stars. I recommend taking standard rooms from higher floors, not the superiors in the lower floors which were smaller and had insects..

Place Inn in Medan is nothing more than just a budget hotel. The rooms are reasonably clean with air-conditioning and running hot and cold water in the bathroom. Rooms usually come with breakfast for 2. However, do not expect a hearty breakfast as what you get is merely consumable spicy Indonesian food. All in I would give this hotel an average rating only.
