Boutique Hotel located between Matlock and Matlock Bath - Under new Management since October 2014 - New restaurant Opened February 2015 'Artist's Corner Restaurant'
Never again will we visit. This is no boutique hotel and to be honest Travel Lodge is better! At least they don't give you decrepid damaged furniture! Food was awful in the restaurant so don't spend your money!! Breakfast was dire, cardboard croissants ...horrendous papercups and coffee out of machine. Bathroom dirty cold ....

The Explorers Retreat is a fantastic destination for families. Discover pirate, princess and wizard cabins. The resort is beautifully laid out with themed accommodation overlooking the magnificent Derwent Valley and in close proximity to more than 50 rides, attractions and shows. The self contained cabins are perfect for those seeking a great adventure, away from the traditional hotel experience. Surrounded by the magnificent Peak District, it's the perfect retreat for explorers wishing to discover all that the local area has to offer including caverns, rivers and moors - perfect for walking, cycling or simply exploring! Matlock Bath is just a two minute walk away, the town has a park, cycleways and plenty of footpaths. Stay and play packages include entry to Gulliver's Kingdom theme park.
Just returned from a 4 night stay at explorers retreat, we stayed as a group of 8 (4 adults and 4 kids). We stayed in the promenade rooms, the rooms were very clean and I would definitely recommend the promenade over the higher priced rooms as you have a little courtyard with a ping pong table. However we had a few things that we were not happy about, one been the heating kept going off and we had to go to reception 2 out of the 4 nights to advise the staff about this. Also, the kids couldn’t play ping pong as they had ran out of balls and we were told they’d buy some tomorrow although that never happened. The other issue we had was a few of the staff members, the young girl on the bar upstairs permanently had a face like a wet weekend in Blackpool, no manners either. Another older lady on reception didn’t seem to have a clue what she was doing, we went to buy park tickets from her and she said that we had to buy them at the park. I knew this wasn’t the case so I called the main gullivers helpline and was advised we got them from reception. When we went back to tell her, she had to ask another staff member, after about 10 mins of them trying to work out how to do it, she brought over the card machine along with her mobile phone and accidentally paid, she proceeded to say “oh sh*t”, not very good while our children were stood there and at accommodation that is aimed towards children! Other than that the rest of the staff were friendly, the entertainment team especially were helpful and polite! It would just be nice if management invested in some training and advised ALL their staff that manner cost nothing!!

A country Inn, set in Derbyshire's white peak. Offering a range of real ales, and locally sourced food. The Jug and Glass Country Inn is an ideal base when visiting the peak district.
Decided to eat out last minute and was lucky enough to get a table that afternoon, 2xBeef Sunday roast and 1x vegan pie, chips and salad, Service was exceptional as was the food, the place its self was very traditional and had a good welcoming atmosphere, we will definately be back.

Booked a luxury double room. Room 1 at the front of the building. Stained carpets although looked as if they had been cleaned you could still see the stains. Curtains were hanging off the rail. Only does continental breakfast for 6.50 a head comprising croissant piece of fruit pain ah chocolat jam and butter orange juice safe to say I didn't get that. On the plus side bed was comfy and the room was really warm wouldnt book again though.

This beautiful 19th Century former 'Drovers Inn' and 'working farm' now finds itself a cosy, traditional country inn. Our inn has recently been redecorated in a traditional country style that provides a warm and comfortable atmosphere for both drinkers and diners alike. The extensive floral gardens offer comfortable seating areas, as well as a fully enclosed heated patio area overlooking 'Riber Castle and the Derwent Valley'.
I just cannot believe the reception we received. We were shown to our room which was very nice little room. After settling in we went into the pub for refreshments where we met our host for the week. Kerry was exceptionally welcoming, big friendly smile and introduced us to other staff members. There was not one thing that any member of staff would not do. All the food was superb, be it breakfast or evening meal, all of it freshly cooked and presented. My wife and I tour often and have never been made more welcome anywhere. We were celebrating joint birthdays and also wedding anniversary. We were totally surprised to be given breakfast in bed in the morning. Make no mistake that next time we are in the area we will be returning. A great big thanks to ALL the staff, wishing you continued sucess

The perfect place from which to explore the many attractions of the Peak District. Relax and enjoy a diverse range of food and drinks for every occasion with relaxing rooms.
Very dusty place. Not a nice, welcoming place. Hosts was grumpy and couldn’t be bothered with any comments made. Breakfast was very poor quality ingredients. Definitely wouldn’t recommend or return. Much nicer places nearby and much better value for money.

A former Edwardian residence in the beautiful, peaceful Derbyshire Dales with easy access to the Peak District National Park, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House, plus lots of other attractions. Our rooms are decorated to a high standard and are all ensuite. The beds are all seven foot long. Lots of in room amenities. In addition we cater for all dietary needs and of course The Full Derbyshire Breakfast! A la carte and cooked to order. We are licensed and serve Afternoon Teas, please enquire. We have a dog friendly room with its own entrance.
We had a two night stay over the Jubilee weekend & we were very pleased we had chosen Sheriff Lodge, as we could not fault anything. Ziz is so very friendly, her attention to detail is impressive. She obviously loves hosting & meeting her guests, we felt very at home & relaxed the whole time. The room we chose (The Dray) was spacious, spotlessly clean & the huge bed was so comfortable. It is just a few minutes walk down the hill into Matlock, so the location is perfect for us. The breakfast experience was excellent & the choice is really good, it was served very quickly too. We were told by another couple that the afternoon tea was amazing, but we didn't have time to try this ourselves. We have booked a return visit in September & we are having afternoon tea next time for sure! We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Matlock after this visit!
