It was not a far drive from Biei city centre and the route is straighforward. Its right beside the road and you will not miss it, beside the blue pond. The guesthouse feels very local. Its old yet clean and has a nostalgia feel to it. I sometimes like staying a night or so in these type of ryokan so you can feel how locals live in the past. We were greeted by the owner who kindly showed us around. We were offered a bedroom in the corner. Its spacious and clean, though next to the road is not too noisy. There is a kitchen and a common room on the ground floor and we met some locals and had a good chat with them and exchanged e-mails which is very nice. They also have meals but you have to pre-order before a certain time. I like the onsen best - its a natural one with brownish-yellow color - very relaxing in a quiet, forrest area. It was raining all night and added some natural rhythm to the night. We also went out to look at the stars. Beyond the street lamps, it was pitch dark and it was such a nice tranquil feeling. If you do not mind it being old, I think its good to stay there for the onsen and a night sleep. I think they can improve the doors-one leads out to the male outdoor onsen(squeaky) and the one on 1/F leading to the balcony for smoke break.(not sure if its the slamming or squeaky that is causing the noise starting at 5a.m.)Maybe just ask for a room not close by the balcony for smoke break if you're a light sleeper like me.

10 may 2019, stay in this hotel. The hotel provide comfortable tatami room for sleep, delicious foods with a lot choices, outdoor and indoor onsen (hot spring). I choose outdoor onsen cause all the family can gather together in the natural hot water. Sure, one day i will come back again.

We stayed in the cottages. It is situated in the middle of an amazing park. But... The maintanance is below par. The bed smelled badly of cigarets. The airconditioning did what it pleased. The whole structure and furnitures where out dated. If they would renovated, they could easily reach 5 stars. I wish they will, then I would definetly come back.

This was a hard hotel for us to rate to be honest - as it is clearly past his hey-day. The rooms and furniture are quite worn, there is an old heater that needed some googling to get going if you don't read japanese (already needed in early october). Which would have led to a lower than 4 start rating. However it was still perfectly clean, comfortable and the baths where good (inside) - and very good (outside). This combined with the price and location (right in the village, literally 2 minutes form the ropeway) we did decide on 4 stars. We would return without hesitation. Due to mixed reviews on tripadvisor we did not book the dinner in the hotel and had dinner elsewhere in the village. This is a great option to avoid the large resort ryokans in the area.
