Very disappointing. This place is presented as a luxury hotel/spa Japanese-style and draws very positive reviews on TripAdvisor and Japanese sites. Supposedly serving gourmet food including a signature meal centring on blowfish (fugu). So the disappointments first. The fugu meal was unremarkable and considering the price tab a real bust -- many of the dishes included seemed like some formulaic preparation at a chain restaurant. The staff were lifeless, showed no enthusiasm for serving you, and offered little hospitality -- surprising because elsewhere in Hagi we were struck by how friendly, upbeat and keen to help everyone was. The hotel was situated right against a busy highway. And the mattresses seemed pretty worn -- you could feel the coil springs. On the positive side, the view from the dining room across Hagi Bay and the islands was pretty spectacular-- too bad you could not eat the view. And the lay out of the rooms was spacious and thoughtfully done. It is hard to feel good about paying so much for such an indifferent stay.

Second night in hagi, and we moved from hagi 1 rin to hagihonjin. Facility is better. Staff well trained. you can taste the bad management. Ice cubes, you have to pay. A ride to the top of the hill, you have to pay. As you walk out of the hot bath area, they dont give you water but they are rubbing their hands with a display of cold drinks. When we booked, we had had enough of blowfish, but, no option to change the menu. No option for room only, bit no option to change menu. Ditto for brekki. The worst was the noise we suffered from upstairs. Insulation wad obviously poor, and there was a family with small kids above us. so noisy and we rang the reception to complain, but the noise continued until midnight. This is a very quiet time, majority of the rooms are empty, why would you put a family with small kids above anyone. Shows how bad the Management is.

The hotel is located directly at the beach with a great view over the sea. Food at dinner and breakfast was the best of our Japan trip. Free coffee and sweets were available in the afternoon at relaxation area. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nice Japanese bath. Sightseeing spots are in walking distance or accessable with rental bike.

Large modern ryokan /hotel with spacious bedrooms suites and lovely garden views. The staff is friendly and attentive. But the highlight is the wonderful Japanese cooking for both dinners and breakfasts. Only drawback is the location which is close to the train station but far from the historical center of Hagi.
