The historic quarter of Colonia del Sacramento, founded in 1680, evokes old Lisbon with its Portuguese-influenced architecture and winding streets. The area, located in southwestern Uruguay on the Rio de la Plata, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. It's an easy day trip by ferry from Buenos Aires, making the beaches a popular Argentinean escape. Major sights include Iglesia Matriz, the country's oldest church, the Municipal Museum and a 17th-century port jutting into the river.

What a fool I was. I only booked two nights here. Yes, we had other places in Uruguay and Buenos Aires we wanted to explore during this trip. But what we didn't realize is that Los Limoneros would be such a delight. It's a confluence of so many extraordinary elements that make a stay memorable. One is the staff, led by owners Mario and Sergio. Sergio's fantastic cooking and gracious hospitality, Mario's intellectual depth and knowledge of the area, the Monet-ready garden (complete with lily ponds), the lemon groves, the lovely pool, the proximity to a gorgeous historic town and beach... wow. I want to stay there for a month, at least. Two nights! My wife and I were just starting to get into the Limoneros vibe when we had to leave. Shame on me.

A 19th-century house recently converted into a stunning, modern hotel located in the heart of the historical district. Magnificent garden and pool area make it ideal for both couples and families. Thirteen rooms and a brand new loft apartment all with A/C, LCD TVs, cable and WIFI. Services include buffet breakfast, pool, BBQ, garage, computer & TV lounge and wood fireplace.
This is a lovely hotel that feels like an upscale hostel. The location is excellent- right in the heart of historic Colonia and an easy walk to all tourist attractions, restaurants, and the ferry. The staff was very helpful and gracious and the breakfast buffet was excellent. We needed a triple room for my sons and I, and they have a spacious room with 3 singles that fit the bill. I highly recommend this hotel, which is an excellent value for the money.

The rooms are very small and very dated. The bathroom looks better because it has nice tiles. The breakfast has basic options, basic quality. The girl from the reception was very nice. It is ok for 1 maximum 2 days, otherwise you can feel like staying at a retirement home.

Rooms are very basic, WiFi wasn't good, but we absolutely loved it here. Very quaint and beautiful country setting. Owners were very friendly, (English was limited). You would need a car. It's about 10km from Colonia del Sacramento, which we also loved. It's positioned on a good road so exploring in a car is easy from this place. Continental breakfast was good. Has got a small pool and kids play area and has good outside seating area. We would recommend this lovely peaceful place to anyone.

Far from the terminal (15 minutes on foot), dark rooms, poor shower boiler, spiders and ants in the room, and the slowest wifi in the whole South America: this place definitely needs renovation and not worth the price.

By a stroke of luck our cruise ship was forced to overnight in Montevideo, so we were able to spend one night in the romantic old town of Colonia del Sacramento at Colonia Suite Apartments. We were warmly welcomed by Luis, who ushered us into the most wonderful row house ever—beautiful brick walls covered with his amazing paintings and tile floors. We walked along the entry hall, admiring his artwork, to a lovely living room where the reception desk was. Beyond that was a kitchen/dining room that opened onto a lovely garden with high brick walls and lovely plants, trees, and flowers everywhere. Our suite upstairs (a small apartment in itself) had a private bath with a lovely rock-walled shower, living room with king-sized bed, small kitchen/dining area, and a private patio overlooking the garden below. Before we set out to explore the town, Luis gave us a map, marked with the not-to-miss attractions + recommendations of restaurants for dinner. It was an absolutely magical place to stay. Our only regret was that we could not stay longer. We would have loved to spend several days there!
