I have stayed in a couple of different hotels in Japan but no other compares to this one. It is not the most luxurious hotel but you really experienced the Japanese culture at this place. Only negative thing is that you do not have your own bathroom. Great food!!

It is a 1-minute walk from Asamushi-Onsen Station. A small but cozy small hotel. A reserved bath is it in three places and a footbath other than a large communal bath. A lot of delicious local brew prepares for the meal with Japanese foods.
I decided to come all the way from Tokyo to this location near Aomori in the middle of some heavy heavy snowfall and snow blizzards. Thankfully, the Ryokan is literally in front of the train station. This was very helpful in the middle of a white out snow blizzard. Expect this kind of weather in northern Aomori in mid-December. The train station Asamushi Onsen on the Aomori Railway is fairly straightforward to access from Aomori Station and brings you to the Ryokan fairly easily. There isn't a big sign which would have been helpful during a snow blizzard. Check-in was fairly easy , even with no Japanese, the lady understood the important basic things required for simple check in I needed to know. I had asked for an "ocean" view when booking and that was the best part really.. amazing view of Mutsu Bay from the room. The room was a really really big tatami floored room for just one. Nice softbeds, some loose matcha green tea leaves and tea set/kettle. Despite the spacious room, almost no space between ends of beds and cheap wardrobe. Kind of just shoved in there. TV and Japanese dining table although I didn't use them. And an Aomori Apple cake of some description to welcome, nice touch. Really annoying noisy air conditioner / heater, although managed to turn off the "swing" function that kept me awake. Reception had a nice log fire, but it's a kind of dark and creepy place. I guess there's not much happening here in mid-winter. Here was the onsen. Pretty standard bathing facility is you're familiar with these kinds of onsen. No view so nothing special or noteworthy to write. Had to use it as the room had no bathroom. I didn't eat meals here so cannot comment. The location is excellent, near some places to buy food and the other onsens and places of interest all nearby. I wonder if they need to update one or two things as it does feel kind of outdated but for the price and size of room, cannot complain.

If you're looking for a traditional ryokan experience, this may be the place for you. The location is within walking distance from Asamushi-Onsen station; however the ryokan offers a free shuttle service. The downside is that English is not easily understood here, so trying to arrange for the shuttle could be a challenge, so walking is do-able (about 10 minutes). Tsubakikan shows up on google maps, so just enter the name into your smart phone and start navigating to the ryokan. Just don't bring large suitcases with you. An overnight bag is the way to go. Dinner was served in our room and breakfast in a dining room with other guests (sitting on the floor). Meals were plentiful and delicious. They appear to have a family bath available, but that option is not open to the public until April, so only the public baths (onsen) are usable. The onsen was typical and also had an outdoor bath to enjoy. Throughout the ryokan there are displays from the Nebuta Matsuri floats that make for good photo opportunities. As a side note, this ryokan is said to be one of the few in Japan that has onsen water that is actually drinkable. Drinking the water is supposed to be good for your health. The business is more than 400 years old and continues to be run by the same family. It's an impressive history.

I don't understand these mostly very good ratings here, but this "ryokan" offers only average to low value for money. Positive: ++ good location, very close to Aomori station (not Shin-Aomori where the shinkansen stops!) + good breakfast + friendly, older woman runs the place Average: ~ quite thin walls, you can easily wake up, when someone else e.g. uses the shared restroom ~ roomsize average for Japan but definitly not big Negative: --- only one shower for about 6-7 rooms and maybe max. 15-20 guests -- cleanliness: toilets are almost clean, shower-room is already run down and not very clean, really disgusting are the old mattresses and blankets A place which can only be recommended for low budget travellers.
