Mohanam began as an effort of young people from the rural villages surrounding Auroville, an international city in Tamil Nadu, India. The group renovated the oldest building in Sanjeevinagar and set up an institution to celebrate the many cultures of the people of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. In an era when the old and traditional are vulnerable and challenged, this new institution triggered a cultural journey for the local people. Inspired by the young people and local elders of the villages, Mr. Balasundaram and his friends set out to found Mohanam Village Heritage Centre on July 14, 2001. Mohanam is a non-profit, non-governmental organization.Today Mohanam seeks to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu. It reflects the beauty, traditions, innovations and the continuing evolution of South Indian arts and culture.

For anyone who enjoys books or libraries the Niligari library is a must visit. It was one of the highlights of my tour of south India. The atmosphere in this wonderful Gothic style building is wonderful and well worth experiencing. The staff were very welcoming and we toured the building with our guide. I wanted to spend far more time there just looking at books and soaking up the ambience. I held my first ever original copy of Punch magazine and sat in a chair staring at a wonderful painting of Queen Victoria , a painting with its own fascinating Indian history.

I have visited Auroville 4 times in the past as many years. It is a lovely place. The Visitor center is very tourist friendly place. It is very peaceful, the food court is lovely and the meals are super healthy. I had a Healthy Meal - it was a full meal with Beetroot soup and salad and a lot of other things. It s a must visit place for any tourist in Pondichery.. The shops there are also lovely.
