State park that has three waterfalls and many hiking trails.
Our adventure today took us to Swallow Falls, weather called for rain so we were well prepared with boots and umbrellas.....rain held off for our entire hike but oh my goodness we should have brought our ice cleats to make the hike safe. The falls were raging and AMAZING but definitely was a tricky, slippery trek getting there. Will be returning soon!!

A great spot for water skiing, boating, hiking and swimming.
What a great place to have a picnic and a swim at a wonderful lake. The staff keeps it so clean and they are so friendly. Small charge to get in but you will love the hiking trails and the history here.

Great family vacation spot. This is a well-maintained well-run State Park. Lots of activities for kids of all ages: swimming in season, boat rentals and walking. There is 5.5 mile walk to Swallow Falls State Park. The mountain air smells fresher here.

... this museum allows for a deep and wide view of a town and a county in their heyday... when the railways going through Oakland turned it into an important relay node towards other cities.. pictures of now defunct hotels and busy railway construction point to an industrial and social activity that would be difficult to evince from today's relative inactivity and quietude.. must see..

We went to this museum during the Autumn Glory festival. This museum is free which is great! It is small but you can see it all in an hour or so. There are classic cars, boats, a train display and it covers transportation in the Garrett County region throughout the years. Some displays feature the various outdoor activities within the resort atmosphere of the area in past years. There is a large display of a very tragic accident where a school bus stalled on railroad tracks in the area and it was hit by a train. Seven children died and many more were injured. The display is quite detailed with text and pictures and shows everyone involved in the accident, even the hospital staff and their recollections of the event. This accident led to reform in school bus maintenance and better signaling on railroad tracks in the area. I believe the museum is open from 10-3 daily, so go early.

Looks like a restoration recently happened. The building is in beautiful condition. LOTS of great information here. If you're a railroad buff, worth the stop. Check the hours, as they are limited. Wish more of the railroad depots survived and were in this condition.

A Unique Collection of Antiques & Collectibles including: Ephemera, Old Books, American Paint Company Clay / Chalk / Mineral Products, Shabby Chic, Primitives, Architectural Items, Glassware, Kitchen Collectibles, Advertising, and more! Located on Liberty Street in Oakland Md, just up hill from the Historic Train Station.
We've stopped in here many times hoping to see some antique furniture pieces or real antiques, but not so far. It's mostly collectibles and they do have a good display of those. It's a fun place to stop in and look around. They have some good "junk" pieces (wrought iron, wood) that are fun to acquire and restore. Birdhouses. Lots of collectibles (small things). The owner/store keeper is friendly and entertaining. This is a nice place to stop if you are spending the day in Oakland looking around at the various stores, museums, train station or perhaps going to the Farmers Market on Wednesday or Saturday mornings. Who knows? You may find the perfect thing to decorate your house in this eclectic shop :) Stop in their other store at Red School House, just outside of Oakland on 219 towards WV line.

My 8 year old had a blast on the Island and claimed repeatedly it was the favorite part of her long weekend. Like other folks have mentioned though it's pretty price prohibitive for larger groups and families. It was certainly $30 well spent in our case but it's going to be hard to fork over that $60 when my son is ready to go too.
The whole outdoor space was well maintained and had several life guards throughout. There are also several picnic tables on the grounds and a floating dock that encircles the entire course that you are free to walk around on to watch the shenanigans.
Overall it was a good time but the sticker shock was a bit difficult to digest.
