We had a few hours to spend in Madison and were glad we went first to the Welcome Center, where we were helped by Billie, a wealth of information about sights, restaurants, shops and the history of this delightful town. We ended our visit at the Center as well, and had an enjoyable chat with Nina.

The tour through this house was interesting and quite informative. There was a tour about half way done and we joined in at the beginning of the upstairs tour. At the end, the docent immediately started again with the downstairs. That made it convenient to not have to wait and people came and left at various points throughout the tour.

Melissa provides a very good first timer's tour of Madison for those who prefer a guided tour. The walking tour is about 2 hours and loops through the historic neighborhood and the cemetery. Not being a native of Madison, she has really studied-up and is very knowledgeable of the area and its residents. Those who prefer a more in-depth background on local lore may prefer someone who's family has roots in the area.

Madison Morgan Cultural Center

Beautiful brick building, complete with a bell tower. The Cultural Center is a self guided tour, upstairs and downstairs. The auditorium is still used today for plays and concerts throughout the year, woodwork and floors are original. The chandelier is unique. Most off the downstairs is devoted to themes of the early 1700's. You can learn about the land, how they worked, farmed, traveled and played. Upstairs is a class room restored with original desks and chairs. The school was segregraded, and operated until 1957. A couple of the rooms are dedicated to the Arts and Crafts gallery.

Rogers House and Rose Cottage

Reviewed By cordyroy - Naples, Florida

Both of these adjacent houses provide an interesting slice of Madison's history. Rogers House is the oldest remaining house in town and is still on the original lot. Rose Cottage is named after "Miss Rose", an African-American lady born into slavery who bought the lot, built the house and lived in it for 70 years. Tour was helpful and informative. Save a few $ and buy the combo ticket with the nearby Heritage House.

I was truly stunned when I recently visited Madison, GA about an hour east of Atlanta. This historic building was renovated into a beautiful wine bar/speakeasy and cinema! Its in downtown Madison across from the courthouse and is the MUST-SEE place to visit. The interior of the wine bar is warm, relaxing and entertaining complete a stunning re-crafted brick wall from an old building, intricate detailed ceiling tiles and old chandelier lights. The old wine bar itself is authentic and the displays of wine available are a treat. If you love those moments with memorable great wines and hospitable friends then I really want you to visit this place.
Then there is the theater where every seat is great and close to the screen. It seats about 50 and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie! I love watching movies and I felt comfortable and greatly entertained. The quality of the movies is unmatched - you can watch movies from the great independent movie festivals like Tribeca, Sundance and Toronto. These are first run type movies with great actors and the atmosphere of the cinema really promotes a wonderful experience. I am really impressed with the movie posters -they are all authentic and some date back to the 60's! It's a historical place to visit and you will always remember it. Madison really has a great thing going on at this place. Wish I lived closer to visit it and the owners more often - they are the creators of something special. Like Wine and movies? Visit this place. They even have a neat eatery in the front with great tasting hotdogs, and custard in a cool atmosphere! I didn't know I loved custard till I visited. I live in Florida and I wish we had something like this! I can't wait till I visit again - I already changed my vacation plans this year so I could go back.

After you pass through the metal detector - if court is not in session, you can tour the whole building. It's a beautiful domed building, lots of rooms to go into, has been used in various movies, including American Made with Tom Cruise, and Goosebumps. It's one of 26 historic -- although Hubby and I saw more than that driving through town --wish we could tour the Hunter Home - Victorian Gingerbread trim all around. Beautiful town of Madison, GA.
