This is Orkney's largest island after Mainland.
A truly wonderful day trip, we were lucky with the weather which helped a lot. Breathtaking scenery all the way round from Lyness up to Rackwick Bay. Very useful information boards all the way round.

Island Tours of Hoy A warm welcome awaits you on the Island of Hoy, the second largest island in the Orkney archipelago with a population of approximately only 400 residents. Hoy or Haey, the Old Norse word for high, is unique, and very different from the Orkney Mainland and other isles. The vertical cliffs are the highest in the British Isles, there are vast swathes of wilderness, an abunda

A lovely walk from Rackwick which goes past several wee local museums that are certainly worth a visit ( they are beside Rackwick Hostel ) The sea cliff views are amazing as is the birdwatching. Keep kids on a short leash ! In season you will drive past the RSPB observation stop for the Sea Eagles that nest there - also amazing.

Excellent museum full of the history of the Lifeboat in Longhope and the crews who risked and gave their lives. There is someone to show you around too. Well worth a visit.

A 5,000-year-old monument that's thought to be Britain's only rock-cut tomb.
A 5000 year old tomb that you can crawl into-whats not to like..!! the age and how it was carved is mindblowing. Well worth a quick 30 min detour

The museum is closed for redevelopment until Spring 2022. See 'Orkney Museum - Treasures and Tales' for an exhibition about the wartime history of Scapa Flow.

I spotted this on my OS map as i was driving round South Walls (attached to Hoy by a causeway); I thought, mmm, I wonder what Martello tower means, having never heard of one before. The site has Napoleonic barracks, battery and the Martello Tower. The site managers, who take you round, are very interested in the history which makes the whole site come alive. The view from the top of the Tower is beautiful. When I visited the charming David Mager was the site manager. (I was actually there in July 2017 but I cannot select that below)

Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery, Hoy and Graemsay, is on Hoy, between Mill Bay and Ore Bay. Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery was begun in 1915 when Scapa Flow was the base of the Grand Fleet. Lyness remained as a Royal Naval base until July 1946 and the cemetery contains graves from both wars.
