We enjoyed climbing the Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle, Florida. The history is fascinating and the climb in the enclosed "tubular" center structure was different than any lighthouse climb we've done in the past. It was hard to imagine a lighthouse keeper lugging jugs of fuel for the light up these tiny circular stairs. What hard work! The little museum in the lighthouse keeper's house was interesting.
We did a Lighthouse Field Trip highlighting 4 lighthouses in this daytrip - St Marks, Crooked River in Carrabelle, Cape St George on St George Island and Cape San Blas in Cape St Joe. A long day but LOTS of fun! DO IT if you get a chance!

Thanks to this museum, people can learn about the amphibious WWII soldiers who trained in the area. Items of interest include: newspaper headlines, camp equipment, uniforms, and photos. A film shares what went on at the five camps. The museum has plenty of room to grow since it's move to the new location.

Nice beach on the bay, just west of Carrabelle, in Carrabelle Beach, Florida. It has covered picnic tables, rest rooms, and outdoor shower. Handy foot wash to get sand off. Parking is located just off of the highway. There is approximately 1.5 miles of beach to walk. Due to orientation you can see the sun come up over the water. In the mornings we were able to see dolphins frolicking very near shore (with 10-feet). It was very convenient to the RV park where we were staying (right across the highway).

This "station" which could be "mistaken" as a phone booth is a real hoot! This was the "Comm. Center" for Carrabelle P.D. where the Chief/Officer etc. would sit so if someone called into "the station" for assistance. Great small town fun for photos and stories! Downtown Carrabelle on the north side of Hwy. 98. Can't find it...stop in at the helpful visitor center near it for directions.

This free small museum is housed in the old city hall which was built as a WPA project in the 1930's. It covers the local history from paleo-indians to the end of the 20th century. It contains artifacts donated locally of Indian pottery, civil war relics, transportation, industry, and local family contributions to the city and state. The displays encourage visitors to examine the relationships of the people to their changing environment over the course of history. It is well worth spending a hour or two to tour the exhibits.

We shopped here on a Sunday afternoon and picked up a great fossil tray at a great price. While small, they have a wide selection of antiques, art, and furnishings at good prices. The staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient.

What a varied environmental crockpot this is. The forest is mostly pines along with oaks and some exotics. Much of the park is a swampy wetland that is pretty much inaccessible and home to bears, deer, hogs and a whole lot more. Some friends and I went way off the beaten bath to explore by canoe one of the many creeks in the swamp. I now know how Mr. Tate got lost in that wilderness. There are plenty of passable forest roads that will take you to parts unknown as well as some historical sights. If you like the outdoors and want to visit natural north Florida, take a few hours or days to hike, camp, canoe, drive off road and enjoy this unspoiled gem.
