Blue Island, Illinois, the south Chicago suburb where my wife and I were born and raised, has changed dramatically since we were growing up in the 1950s. But we return periodically to see our old homes and visit old friends and stop at two wonderful bakeries and Three Sisters Antique Mall. On our most recent visit, we walked along South Western Avenue and recalled the stores and theaters that used to be there. Located at 13042 South Western Avenue, in the historic Woolworth Building that was built in 1918, Three Sisters has been ranked as the No. 1 antique store in the south suburbs. Opened in 1996, it features 72 booths, covers two floors and 14,000 square feet and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We got hooked on Three Sisters several years ago when my wife was searching antique malls from Chicago to Natchez to Richmond to Vicksburg to Sarasota for Sterling silver napkin ring holders. Not ordinary napkin ring holders, mind you, but ones crafted in Sterling silver. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find them. Well, she found a couple of them at Three Sisters. And we've been going back to find hard-to-find antiques ever since...books, glassware, housewares, vintage clothing, even furniture. And my sister, an antique freak who travels throughout the Midwest to find items that she uncovers at flea markets that she sells at yard sales, has opened a stall at Three Sisters. No, she hasn't come up with any Sterling silver napkin ring holders yet.
