This made my day. The grandchildren in the Uk love Mater so to find the original was brilliant. Ladies in shop were lovely and one took our photo with Mater. Fun thing to do on Route 66

The casino is so smokey that a non-smoker can't enjoy being there. My clothes smelled so bad that I took them home in a plastic bag. Understand that smoking and casinos go together, but this one has no installed the air handling systems to make it bearable. Casinos in Tunica do a much better job.
Just walking thrrough the casino to get to their excellent steak house is enough to lose your appepite.
They do have one bar that is smoke free but it is only open on weekend and there is no smoke free gambling area.

Would you like to get your picture taken with Tow Mater? Or the fire engine from the movie Cars? They have them here. When the people from Pixar was researching for the movie Cars, they travelled most of Route 66 and came across this old garage with a rusted tow truck. Across the street was a large garage looking building with a little ornate cement work along the top. The tow truck and building was the inspiration for Tow Mater and Doc Hudson's garage. Subsequent to the movies release the owners of the "4 Women on the Route" garage fixed up a tow truck to look like Mater and procured a fire engine like to one in the movie. He also bought a Hudson which can be seen, but it was a 4 door and doc was a 2 door. The garage has some nice Route 66 souvaneers and some friendly employees and owner. The original Route 66 only traveled 13 miles inside the South East corner of Kansas and the new highways totally bypass it so keep an eye out for Galena, Kansas. Lots of fun for picture taking.

You take a little detour to find this bridge, but it's worth it. It's a big part of the history of Route 66, dating from the '20s when it was built and in operation until the '60s. You can drive over it for fun, but the traffic has been rerouted. It's a beautiful little bridge, worth a stop and a few photos.

I love quirky little landmarks that allow you to step on multiple states at once! My husband surprised us by taking us to the spot where the three states of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri touch. There was a neat concrete marker signifying the Tri-State Marker of Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri that google maps easily guided us to. My toddler had a great time running around back and forth on top of the concrete block where the three states connected and playing with the sticks and rocks. It's a fun little spot to stop if not too far out of your way.

This museum is absolutely crammed with items on display. The couple that was working there when we visited were so willing to tell us about Galena and it's mining history. But there is more than just mining displays. You could easily spend hours looking everything over and I'm sure you would see something new every time you stopped. Well worth an hour or two of your time.

We simply had to ensure we took in the part of Route 66 that goes through Kansas State. It only amounts to 13 miles between Missouri and Oklahoma, we were delighted to happen upon Baxter Springs. Before arriving I found out that Kansas is the Sunflower state which happens to be my late wife's favourite flower.
We were not disappointed as there were many sightings of sunflower motifs and the Kansas Route 66 Visitor's Centre was a real find.
It is small but the recreation of the old style gas station was a joy and judging by the murals on the walls around town, it is clear that Kansas is a big cattle state.
This was a really good stop over and broke up our marathon leg from Springfield to Oklahoma City.
