Nigardsbreen Glacier

Had a great time hiking on the glacier. We did the Short Blue Ice Hike with Jostedalen Breførarlag and had a great experience. As advertised, it is a bit of a trek in - 15 minutes on the boat (each way) + 45 minutes uphill to get from the lake to the glacier. Does require at least a moderate fitness level (one person in our larger group was struggling to make it up to the glacier so turned back before going on the glacier). Great views along the way. Once on the ice, we stopped a number of times for pictures and a snack break. We had a great Nepalese guide who definitely knew his stuff - we felt very safe on the glacier - and was able to take some pictures for us as well. Make sure to clarify what parking lot to meet at (its the one on the lake) and leave enough time to get through the toll between the lot at the glacier center and the meeting point. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area! Leave time to look around the exhibits at the Glacier center before/after as well - great views off the back deck.

Skjolden Llamas

Short farm visits and walks with our llamas. We offer informal and reasonably priced activities with the emphasis on visitors having the opportunity to experience close contact with our herd of llamas. They can be taken on a walk by the river, which is both special and relaxing. We also keep an old breed of Norwegian sheep and sell home grown strawberries and raspberries.

We had such a great time walking the lamas. We walked to a viewpoint and the view was great. The lamas seemed well taken care of and had such great personalities.

On a dark, wet winters day (+1C) called in here on a recommendation from a local. Had the place to ourselves, 2adults 2 kids. Phenomenon thought and designed went into this community owned asset (council), only wish my own country had as much pride in designing publicly owned buildings. Kids had their first ever sauna and steam and loved the electronic timer on the slide (that I won!). We all jumped in the cold pool too. Opening times aren’t normal times so check before visiting.

Although we didn’t climb Molden in January, we drove past it daily as we were staying on Mollandsmarki road. You might need chains on your car depending on weather...we wouldn’t of gotten up the road without them.

The Urnes Ferry

This car ferry goes all-year between Solvorn and Ornes. The schedule in the summertime is different than in the winter, so check out the web-page. 90 passengers and 10 cars (depending on size..) is the capacity, and it is often advisable to be in the ferry-queue early. Fun-fact: all cars must go in reverse when the ferry is loading! But not to worry, -the crew will guide you (and also drive the car for you if you wish) Good service - remarkable view and a worth while experience :)

We had stayed overnight in Gaupne. In the morning we drove over to Solvorn. What a beautiful and picturesque little town this is. We arrived about 8:30 AM, but the ferry didn't leave until 10 AM, so we had ample time to walk around explore and take scenic photos. The ferry is small and can carry a maximum of 8 vehicles and they have to be backed onto the ferry. We watched one lady on the Urnes side try backing a pickup and trailer on. The guy taking care of the loading was very patient with her. Be aware that if you are going from Solvorn to Urnes just to see the Urnes Stave Church, leave your car in the parking lot at Solvorn and just walk onto the ferry it's much cheaper. Parking on the other side is quite limited and you may end up walking up the hill to the church anyway. The trip across takes about 15 minutes. The cost for pedestrians is Kr. 43 each way (about $5 USD). Round trip ticket for the two of us was Kr. 172 ($20 USD), cheap enough and a very scenic and fun ride.
