Famagusta /ˌfæməˈɡʊstə, ˌfɑː-/ (Greek: Αμμόχωστος locally [aˈmːoxostos]; Turkish: Mağusa [mɑˈɰusɑ], or Gazimağusa [gɑːzimɑˈɰusɑ]) is a city on the east coast of Cyprus. It is located east of Nicosia and possesses the deepest harbour of the island. During the medieval period (especially under the maritime republics of Genoa and Venice), Famagusta was the island's most important port city and a gateway to trade with the ports of the Levant, from where the Silk Road merchants carried their goods to Western Europe. The old walled city and parts of the modern town presently fall within the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Gazimağusa District, of which it is the capital. It is also notable as the birthplace of the eponymous hero of the Renaissance proto-novel Fortunatus.

*Update: We are currently open from 9am-1pm from Tues-Sun in our new location serving smoothies, shakes, coffees and a unique breakfast menu. (Muffins, Pancakes, Full English + Veggie Breakfast.) Pop in to see what else we have to offer. We will be open as soon as possible for evenings and entertainment. Imagination is the beginning of creation! Roots Bar, with its laid back vibe, sea views, friendly staff and creative decor inside and out is seen as pretty unique along the North coast of Cyprus. Roots Bar was initially just a drinking hole hosting top quality live music nights twice a week, a great cocktail menu a pool table and a lot of fun attracting both locals, tourists and expats. Now the place provides not only that but a menu to go with it. The experienced chefs have come up with a choice of food that is different to anything in the area using top quality, fresh produce. Roots Bar also hosts themed nights where the menu and decoration is done to suit. Come and check us out!

Just a short drive from the main town, the ruins are just off the parking lot. Not overrun with visitors, but a sprawling gymnasium and baths complex and wonderful ampitheatre are highlights. The short loop takes you to all you need to see. We did the longer walk, which goes through brush for a while before coming to much less impressive ruins.

The largest former church in Famagusta, built by the French in flamboyant Gothic style, and weathered to gold by the Eastern sun and winds. The Turks added a sleek minaret, and kept the interior empty and white, doing a great service to its sleek ogival arches and columns.

mr john ghost town Famagusta tour offer personal expirience and make the tour more sensitive.mr john was born and brought up in famagusta.Mr John’s tour takes you to places that other tours will not. You get to hear about his story making it a more personal experience, and get to see the ghost town of Varosia from both sides of the barbed wire.it’s unique, emotional, informative & something absolutely unmissable. It is an adventure you need to experience yourself. Do not miss it.
We have just came back from Mr John’s Ghost Town Tour. We booked direct with Mr John who you can find parked up in his minibus on the Protaras strip of an evening. Omg what a fantastic tour, ots only €20 where if u book with TUI they charge a lot more. Mr John was able to take us to places off the track that the TUI coach would be unable to reach certain areas . Mr John’s bus is very comfortable with air conditioning and you get perfect views all around. Mr John who is a Greek Cypriot and lives in ghost town many many years ago. and Mr Ahmed his tour guide is a Turkish Cypriot were both very informative throughout the trip and as they both spoke about there history you could feel there pain and hurt of what’s happened (they are both peace keepers) they really gave us a true insight and first hand experience of what it was like to live in Cyprus before and after the invasion in 1974. We visited various locations that mean a lot and have history. We went to the lookout point of the ghost town underneath a cafe they even let you use the Binoculars, I saw the Turkish army doing there patrols. We even walked on the Famagusta beach which is totally amazing. We stopped for lunch in the old city. We then was recommended a beautiful restaurant called Petek which was very reasonably priced and the cakes omg are truly amazing !! What A fantastic day out which I truly recommend!!! It’s a defo must please please go and book direct with mr John the experience is truly amazing. He picks you up at your hotel and drops you back there. Don’t forget your passports... I just want to thank Mr John and Mr Ahmed for an amazing tour guide and I hope this all gets resolved soon. And thank you for being honest and showing us your amazing memories ❤️.

I was quite shocked that they let me inside a mosque in a skirt and sleeveless top. The mosque is beautiful and you can see that it was a church before it was converted. It has water so you can refresh yourself. Take your shoes off before you enter. The wall was impressive and massive. You have to get out to take some pictures. Famagusta is a big city, with lots of history, great souvenirs and other shops where you can enjoy yourself. I totally recommend it!

Wonderful drive with amazing scenery, stop off at some of the village shops and buy carrot/apples - feeding the wild donkeys is a wonderful experience. Bring swimwear and stop at one of the beautiful beaches on the way back

We have just discovered this beach. I have one word to describe the beach itself ‘wonderful’! The facilities and restaurants around it are not too bad. I just don’t recommend you to visit it on a windy day.

You enter through a small wooden gate in the outer wall and nothing prepares you for the scale of the walls surrounding the courtyard that you are in. Well documented with boards in English as you go round and some good views from the top.
