Crystal Lake State Park was the perfect choice of the many lakes in the area. The lake had plenty of parking, picnic tables, boat rentals, and a large bathhouse to shower and change. Crystal Lake is a glacial lake approximately 3 miles long and one mile wide. In places it is over 100 feet deep and great for fishing. We enjoyed this peaceful location at it offered expansive lawns in which to sit and a very large white sand beach for swimming. The water was comfortable for swimming. We enjoyed a nice picnic and spent a lazy afternoon relaxing in this beautiful location.

If you're looking for a beautiful, quiet place well off the beaten track, take a long look at Brighton State Park. Just outside the town of Island Pond in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, Brighton State Park is on Spectacle Pond, and many of the campsites are right next to the pond. The pond's loons "sing" at all hours, as do the bullfrogs. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent. The campsites are clean and well taken care of, as are the bathrooms, which were cleaned several times a day from what I could see. My wife and I took advantage of one of the small cabins available ("Loon"). These cabins have a futon, a bunk bed, a table, and two chairs. There is an electrical light overhead, and one electric plug (which we used to charge cell phones, my electric shaver, and run a coffee-maker). The covered porch was a wonderful place to sit, relax, and listen to the birds. The futon was not the most comfortable of beds by a long shot. I slept better than my wife did. (I can't speak to whether or not the bunk bed was more comfortable.) Nearby Island Pond is a small town with not a lot to do. However, it does have two very nice eating options, The Essex House and Tavern and Hobo's BBQ. (There was a very nice gift shop next door to Hobo's.) If you should go there, explore some of the nearby wildlife areas. (Moose sightings are common.) If you're a birder, Moose Bog is well worth a visit. It's a 25 minute drive east on Rt. 105, and a lovely short hike (half mile) through boreal forest.

Kettle Pond is one among the most beautiful, unspoiled spots in the Groton State Forest. Its waters are framed by forested glacial hills. Kayakers and canoeists carry their boats by hand down a path from a nearby parking area -- motorcraft do not use the Pond. The idyllic Pond is an outstanding spot for fishing, bird watching, and general relaxation. No crowds disturb the peaceful experience.
