The 9 Best Other Outdoor Activities in New Hampshire, United States

May 4, 2022 Nobuko Falco

If you are looking for diversity, you will certainly find it in New Hampshire. From lakes to beaches, waterfalls to woods and mountains to sea coast, the state has huge potential for outdoor vacations, including downhill or cross-country skiing in winter. With no less than seventy-five state parks that offer natural areas, hiking trails, beaches and historic sites, New Hampshire caters for a variety of tastes. Crawford Notch State Park in Harts Location has picturesque waterfalls, wonderful mountain views and opportunities for viewing wildlife. You can go hiking and fishing there as well as pay a visit to the historic Willey House. Monadnock State Park, unlike some other state parks, is open all year round for hiking. Want to go swimming? You will find five state park beaches along the coast of New Hampshire, such as Wallis Sands with its view of the rocky Isles of Shoals. On North Hampton State Beach and Jenness Beach you can have a picnic as well as a swim. When you've finally had your fill of fresh air, head for the Museum of New Hampshire History in Concord with exhibits focusing on heritage and traditions; children should enjoy them just as much as adults.

The Swamp Bats play @ Alumni Field (@ the Keene High School). They are college students from all over the U.S. that play during their summer break (June, July, and the first week of August; there are usually 20-21 home games & about the same number of away games). Some of the players have made it to the Majors. There is active community support for the team, which has been in existence for 22 years. The team has won the New England Collegiate Baseball League title 5 times. There are field games for kids during the game and a mascot that interacts with attendees. Admission price is $5 (Sr discount available). There is a snack shop @ reasonable prices including fresh cut french fries. (NO alcohol allowed as it's on school property.)

Mount Major

I've been up Mt. Major twice now via the Boulder Loop trail and I love it. There's something for everyone, a little walking through the woods, a little climbing up rocks (nothing technical, or even close to it, just enough to convey the idea), a little winding over sun drenched rocks amid the blueberry bushes. There are wonderful views of the surrounding area and especially of Lake Winnipesaukee from the top.

The new "trail" is now open from near downtown to Glen Road. It is just over 2 miles end-to-end and mostly flat terrain. It is paved and in the winter they seem to plow one side and leave the other for cross country skiers. The trail is serene even though you walk over the interstate and behind major shopping centers on Route 4 and Miracle Mile. This will give you a new perspective on Lebanon. There is easy parking and trail access from Mascoma Street (two parking lots). The one to the west of railroad underpass (when you go from Mechanic Street to Mascoma Street... turn left) is at level with the trail. In terms of altitude change, it is downhill a bit as you go west. You might not notice this until you return from Glen Road. It is not too steep, but noticeable. There are benches along the way if you want to rest. I can hardly wait until they manage to connect this with the rail trail. Lebanon is planning to connect them with the Tunnel Project. This should happen within the next few years (work is starting Spring 2020). Plenty of kids, dogs, and friendly folks stretching their legs. A wonderful addition to the Upper Valley.
