The extraordinary Archaeological Park of Messapian Walls stretches for more than 15 hectars, enclosed in a double circle of walls, and is one of the most important and largest archaeological sites in Italy. The symbol of the park, as well as of the city, is the Fonte Pliniano, a monumental spring of water made famous by the quotation of Pliny the Elder for the constant level of its water. On the coat of arms the Fonte is depicted as a well with an almond tree "rising" from it. Going downstairs you will be caught up in the magical atmosphere of the ypogeum where light effects will enchant you and where you will observe the same phenomenon that struck Plinio as well: both if you take off or add some water, its level remains the same. Outside of the mighty megalithic walls, articulated in 3 concentric circles and erected to contain the expansion of the Greek colony of Tarentum, extends the incredible necropolis with more than 2000 Messapian burials, dating back from the VI to the II century b.C. Der ,,Fonte Pliniano" ist der symbolische Ort der Stadt und er wird durch Plinius dem Älteren für die beständige Wasserversorgung dargestellt. Diese Quelle wird im Stadtwappen von Manduria mit einem Mandelbaum abgebildet. Die magische Atmosphäre dieser unterirdischen Höhle beeindruckt die Besucher durch die Lichtquellen. Plinius war für ein besonderes Detail berühmt, auch wenn man stetig Wasser aus dem Brunnen schöpft, bleibt das Wasserniveau unverändert. Außer den drei mächtigen Stadtmauern welche die Stadt gegen die Bedrohung von Taranto schützen sollten, erstreckt sich die unglaubliche ,,Necropolis" mit mehr als 2000 Bestattungen (vom VI bis II Jahrhundert v.C.).
