This was my first introduction to La Crosse Bluffs - area protected by the city of La Crosse in partnership with Mississippi Valley Conservancy. Enchanted by the sheer beauty of the place, I've visited all of the units ever since. Get maps for all five units, and go hiking now, before it gets too hot - most units (this one in particular) require steep ascend to the top of the bluffs.

At 590 feet, this area offers scenic views.
We had a group of 30 motorcyclists venture up the winding road to the top of the bluff on a perfect weather day to view the expanse of LaCrosse and the Mississippi River. It was well worth the ride.

A Downtown park where three rivers meet.
Rotary Lights at Riverside Park for Christmas is the most beautiful thing you could ever see! You can walk through , drive through or some evenings you can take a carriage ride. The skating rink is now open and there is a warming house and hot chocolate is available.

A great place to hike, camp, boat, fish, picnic and see wildlife. It is surrounded by the backwaters of the Mississippi.

They have a great viewing area to see the entire operation, close up. Nice park like setting with picnic tables. Boat landing is just next to this dam and a marina on the North end. To watch the entire operation of passing a large Mississippi barge through here, it takes nearly an hour.

We were walking by the river and found the friendship garden, a bit dedicated to each of LaCrosse's sister cities. We learned a bit about the area of each city and enjoyed the beauty.

Picnicking, weddings, fishing, beach, river views of the city, Mississippi river recreational and commercial (barge) traffic, kayaking: this is a great community source. Spring Mississippi River flooding has curtailed the seasons recently, especially in 2019, but the city responds excellently to the flooded mess and gets the park back in shape as quickly as it can, clearly understanding the high demand for park use. Dead and dying trees have been consistently removed the park over the last couple of years, making the walkways and general use much more safe. And if you need a meal during the late spring, summer and autumn, the Pettibone Yacht Club restaurant offers a good menu, helpful staff and a lovely view of the river and its boating users. It's a great La Crosse area recreational resource.
