Nice friendly hotel - shame about the coffee

Reviewed By BrianJ76

This is a small but very friendly hotel in the pedestrian part of Es Mercadel. The rooms are comfortable and the staff are delightful. The only thing I could complain about is the breakfast coffee. The breakfast itself is fine but the coffee is terrible.

Simple, clean, and welcoming

Reviewed By MattAlis

After a very disappointing (and more expensive) stay in the Carema Club resort in Playas de Fornells, we decided to try the 'real' Fornells and were delighted with Hostal S'Algaret. Great location right on the harbour-side, busy pavement cafe/restaurant all day from breakfast onwards, clean and comfortable room. The rooms are set behind the hostal frontage, so have no sea view, but are all you need for a night or two visiting the town and the area. They even have a small swimming pool, although it is in shade for a lot of the day (at least it was when we visited in September).

Lovely peaceful stay

Reviewed By kiathomas

We have just returned from a fantastic stay here with our 2 year old. We were very well looked after by the super friendly staff and loved the location. It was a short walk to a beautiful beach which we had almost to ourselves. The pool was great for us with a shallow baby pool as well. The area was still quiet following covid and may be early in the season but we loved it. Several nice play areas within reach and we could use the facilities at another nearby hotel too. Perfect for a safe peaceful getway!

Fab girly break

Reviewed By Kellie C

There is everything you need at this hotel and it is very clean with exceptionally hard working staff. Food was very good with a big variety to choose from. Adult only pool was fab as we didn’t have kids with us. Drinks on all inclusive were good too. It is a busy resort but queues move very quickly so your not waiting to long. I would definitely return here but bring the kids next time.

View to die for

Reviewed By FrankUnitedkingdom

In 45 years of holidaymaking I’ve never packed a suitcase without a small toolkit*. From Bruges to Bratislava, Mahe to Majorca and La Rochelle to Les Deux Alpes there has never an occasion where bacon has not been saved. Thus it was at Rocas Marinas where a shower dribbling like a hay-fevered Pinocchio was transformed to raging Niagara with 3 seconds of judicious screw-driving. Far and away the best features of this destination are the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean - Favaritx lighthouse in the offing - and the secluded peaceful location remote from the hurly burly of popular tourism. Surrounded by just 7 self catering apartments the pool area is shielded from all but the fiercest sea breezes and gets the sun practically all day. The apartments are bijou rather than expansive but adequately equipped for the self catering novice and furnished in a simple style. Take morning tea on your terrace before 8am if the skies are cloudless or else risk a tan like a Sam Browne belt before breakfast. The rocky foreshore toward the sea would be impenetrable to Viking hordes riding Centurion tanks so that no aspect of the shining sea is sullied by strolling, vestless, blistered paunches or shrieking children. Instead the daily visits from fishing boats hauling and laying nets provide interludes of bucolic industry while cormorants look on enviously. Beaches may be found within a mile or so as are bars, restaurants, various supermarkets and gift shops along with tacky amusements to divert the bored. Sadly the worst feature of Rocas Marinas is the willingness to accommodate children, the parents of whom are deluded into thinking that their spawn and the relentless screaming, clapping, grizzling and playground detritus with attendant children’s potties littering the lawn are a delightful accompaniment to a relaxing holiday for anyone else. I should have been more discriminating, Menorca has a wealth of adult only apartments but none are so well situated. Thus the holiday was not benevolently enhanced. This area needs a car unless you are training for the marathon. Buses run from the Punta Grossa/Arenal centre. Punta Grossa is something of a peninsular and the Rocas Marinas are accessed counter-clockwise from the threshold. Local signposting is confusing so allow at least a couple of hours to find the place from Mahon airport. Don’t try it in the dark. ME7 Northwest then ME9 East. Once you get here you’ll probably forgive Google maps and the car GPS as the trek was worth it in my humble opinion. Na Macaret nearby has a cute little beach and a couple of fine restaurants including the Biosphera. Only order the Tuna if you’re planning on feeding the five thousand. Favaritx lighthouse is curiously recommended as a feature of interest but nobody other than geology students would imagine it worth the hike which should be accomplished in rugged boots. The roads are generally quiet and driving standards fairly good. Menorca is much less visited than Majorca and preferred for tranquillity and rural scenery. If there’s nightlife here it’s not pervasive. From late September to early June Menorca is pretty much closed so that most restaurants, many hotels, pharmacies, the Venta de Queso just along the road to Mahon and all ancient monuments are shut up or deserted. To compound the frustration they all blatantly insist they are open. If there was to be a Eurovision Mañana contest then surely Menorca would win hands down. Siesta is deeply ingrained into the Menorcan psyche but the vision of a somnolent Mahon leaping frantically into life at 5.30 every afternoon is a sight to behold. Little wonder the Spanish armada failed if they all slipped off for a snooze at 2pm every day. Very much worth a visit is the superb Bodega Binifadet just by Sant Llouis. As well as a restaurant the winery does tours of the vineyard and cellars/winemaking plant with a tasting thrown in. Ubiquitously a 12 month old child was brought to join the tour! If I carried a noisy transistor radio with me or tootled on a tuneless trumpet I’d be kicked to death in moments and rightly so but how strange that the parents of wailing children are excused any sanction. Nevertheless, the best 8 Euros I spent during the entire holiday. Naturally there is an opportunity to buy wine but no pressure. Sparkling wine is unavailable since their entire production of this is presold before it ever gets into the bottle! Their olives were so startlingly delicious that we tracked down their supplier in a back street of Mahon to bring home a reserve stash. What does the apartment lack? Coasters. Take also UK toilet paper, Spanish toilet paper is thinner than the Flat Earth Society’s election manifesto. Waiting at the airport for our return flight we were disturbed...or would have been... to find that the cleaning staff were on strike. So the place looked just like Gatwick on a normal day. Prowling through the litter round the rubbish bins I found a baguette, unopened packet of crisps and a wrapped wedge of cheese. What a result, great holiday after all! *Toolkit should contain: Screwdriver with bits for pozidrive and slotted screws, Pliers, Watchmakers screwdriver set, Swiss army knife, Insulating tape, Superglue, Length of twine, Blutak, Needle/thread, Duct tape, Permanent marker pen and a spiky thing to get the milk from coconuts.
