Laugardalur is a wonderful park in the center of Reykjavík. It has lots of colourful flowers and plants and trees. Lots of ducks stay in the small lake. There are also remains of old Reykjavík there, where the women took the dirty laundry to clean them - which is where Laugardalur got its name from, Laugar comes from Þvottalaugar which means laundromat.

One of the most peaceful & beautiful places to visit in the city. We came in June & the amount of flora was unbelievable some of the plant life here is breathtaking. The smell of fresh flowers & sounds of bird life will make you want to stay for hours especially considering they have a beautifully designed cafe in the centre.

The Akureyri botanical gardens are extremely well kept and I thoroughly enjoy walking through them, getting ideas for my own garden. These gardens are special, particularly for those of us who think that only a few species can survive in the Icelandic environment.

In the last decades Petra Stone Collection has been one of the most visited attraction in East Iceland. In the collection are hundreds of thousands of stones and minerals all from East Iceland in the garden and the house. At Petra Collection you can buy souvenirs made by the family as well as snack at Cafe Sunno. Petra Stone Collection is most likely the biggest private stone collection in the world. Hope to see you in the summer.
In an around a house just off the highway in Stoovarfjorour, Iceland is Petra’s Stone and Mineral Collection. Admission to the property is about $10 US. But, if you like rocks and minerals, you’ll be in rock heavan. Petra, who passed now, was an avid collector of rocks and minerals, thousands of which are on display all around a manicured garden property. There are restrooms, a small cafe, and inside the house a myriad of stuffed animals, birds, and sea creatures. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes looking at all her collections.

We were so fortunate to have a clear, warm beautiful day in August to visit this amazing Botanical Garden. I love to visit gardens in the cities when I travel and this was a real treat. This is a garden with a wide assortment of trees, shrubs and flowers most of which you would not expect to be living in this sub-arctic climate. . It is important to keep in mind that Iceland has very few trees and those that they do have were imported. Therefore most of the trees and plants in the garden are not native so this is a very impressive collection of plants. Great care has been taken to label the plants which I appreciated since some were new to me. It is a credit to the horticulturists at the garden that they are able to grow and maintain such a vast assortment of trees and flowers that are healthy and growing in a difficult climate with limited sunlight for months of the year. . We are from Texas and our state flower is the Bluebonnet. Each spring the roadsides in Texas are blanketed with the bright blue Bluebonnets and they are worth a trip to Texas to see. You can imagine our surprise when we saw bluebonnets in August on the roadsides in Iceland! Apparently they were imported from North America to help with soil erosion. The Bluebonnets in the Botanical Garden were the most impressive. In Texas the bluebonnets are 10-12" high, in the Botanical Garden in Reykjavik they were over 3 ft. tall! They were taller than our children! So things are not always bigger in Texas! Adjacent to the garden is also a zoo and a large children's park. We loved the zoo it was easy to walk through it and the animals were beautiful. The Children's park had everything to keep our active children happy. The day we visited the park there were lots of lovely families enjoying the great weather. Our kids played for hours and had a great time.

This is a beautiful park right on centre of Reykjavik, with lots of benches, statues and wildlife. Worth a visit!
