The 9 Best Farms in Arkansas, United States

June 3, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Living up to its billing as “The Natural State”, the state is a nature wonderland with three national forests, nearly 9,000 miles of pristine streams and rivers, awe-inspiring settings in the Ozark and Quachita mountains and sparkling lakes.

The menu of vacation experiences is an exciting one. For great golf, spas, horse racing and the Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs is the place to go. Outdoor enthusiasts love the Ozark Mountains where activities like canoeing, rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking and rock climbing are popular. The mountain village of Eureka Springs, with its streets lined with Victorian homes, is brimming with boutiques, antique shops and art galleries. Wine enthusiasts love the Arkansas Wine Country, encompassing the towns of Paris, Ozark and Altus, where German style wines are produced. From its ancient mountains to the Delta flatlands leveled by the Mississippi River, the state has a diverse topography with numerous scenic drives. Try the Pig Trail, Ozark Highlands and Sylamore scenic byways in the Ozark National Forest designated by the U.S. Forest Service. Golfers love the state because greens fees are extremely affordable for great courses. A few excellent public access courses are Sage Meadows in Jonesboro, Stonebridge Meadows in Fayetteville and the Mountain Ranch Course in Fairfield Bay.

P. Allen Smith's Garden Home

P. Allen Smith is a famous TV personality - gardens, architecture, homes, cooking, etc. His home is open to tours and lunch - it was excellent.

We've been fans of P Allen Smith TV shows for many years so this visit to his farm was on our bucket list. (It helps to be a fan because the price of the tour and lunch is a bit steep.) The property, with all the gardens, animals, and beautiful buildings made us wish we could live there. The attention to detail and all the thought and creativity that goes into this place are truly inspiring to anyone who is into gardening. It's very easy to imagine you are walking through an estate from the 1800s. The staff was very friendly and organized. Plenty of free cold water was available on this hot day. One suggestion would be to have the guide talk to the group before the tour and explain how much walking there will be and explain what will be seen, and suggest options where you might be able to rest and then rejoin the group. Some of the older guests had a hard time keeping up on some of the rough or hilly terrain. The house also has a lot of stairs, so beware if you are physically challenged. That being said, the lunch was delicious and so nicely presented. P Allen spoke to the group at the end. He is charming and gracious and full of down-home humor. This visit was easily the highlight of our trip to Arkansas. So glad we did it!

My kind of place!!! No fanfare or modern day amenities. It's simply a beautiful drive down Arkansas county roads ending at a well-kept homestead. It's self-guided tour with basic informational signs. Directions: Best bet is get map from Jasper's Chamber of Commerce or ask locals and then follow map and signs (most phones have no service in this area) to Buffalo River - Erbie Campground. Signs for homestead are posted. (History tidbit...The homestead was built during the 1840s by Alvin and Greenbury Parker and then purchased by the Hickman Family in 1912. It remained in the family until the Buffalo became a National River.) And chance to maybe see local elk on the drive there!!!
