The 9 Best Cultural Events in Washington DC, District of Columbia (DC)

April 4, 2022 Franklyn Hardiman

Washington DC is a hub for American politics and history. Attracting as many school field trips as it does travelers the district offers a peek into the country’s democratic origin. There are plenty of free museums to take advantage of but the real draw here is the memorials and monuments dedicated to great American leaders. Spend some contemplative time at the Reflecting Pool within the National Mall, among the most patriotic places in the country.

National Cherry Blossom Festival

You have to watch the timing of your visit so you are there during the peak season for the full bloom - it is so beautiful! Go to the cherry blossom website where they monitor the blossoms and give updates in response to changing the weather conditions. Traffic and parking is very difficult, so if you can walk, take metro, or take a cab, you are better off. We took a cab to the Tidal Basin, but then had a difficult time finding one to return. The Tidal Basin can get very crowded during peak bloom, but it is worth it..... find a place to just sit and enjoy the beauty!

ZooLights

ZooLights is a free event held at the National Zoo each year. From November's light-up launch day into early January, evenings at the zoo become a lot brighter. Colourful fairly lights are strung up around its paths and rest areas, with glowing animal and creature sculptures set around the park. Delightful for children especially, there is a light show set to music to be enjoyed each night. Everyone can appreciate the live musical performances scattered through the festivities, along with holiday stalls set up for shopping, getting a quick bite, or warming hands around hot cider or cocoa. Over 500,000 (environmentally-friendly!) LED lights dazzle, making the park a wonderland.

We loved it. The long, curving main walkway was lined with lights on the trees, lit animal shapes and creative extras. They bring in food trucks and all their regular food venues are open for the occasion. It was crowded there but no lines at the food trucks. It's a lot of walking. We tracked it on our phones and it was three miles to see everything. It is free!
