The 9 Best Cross-country Ski Areas in New York, United States

February 4, 2022 Tonie Szymanski

New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

Mount Van Hoevenberg

Mount Van Hoevenberg is the starting point for 31 miles of beautiful cross-country trails that have seen both Olympic and World Cup competition.

I am a season ticket holder at Mt.Van Hoevenberg and enjoy skiing there very much. There is a lot of variety and the trails are mostly wide and well groomed. I have done classic x country for years and wanted to learn skate skiing. I had a lesson with a young man named Lockey (sp). He was a great instructor and I was immediately able to put his instruction to use and enjoy skate skiing. I have been many times since. Mt Van Hoevenburg is a US olympic training center for Nordic skiing and sled sports so there is a lot going on. Additionally the trails connect to the Cascade Mt. trail system, a more classic type of area. You really can't go wrong at Mt Van Ho. There is even snow making on the competition courses.

My wife and I snowshoe at Paul Smith's College this past Thursday. Bring exact change to buy your daily pass and it is on the honor system. All of these trails were beautifully groomed and very well marked for classic cross-country skiing, skating and or snowshoeing. We were snowshoeing on beautiful trails with beautiful scenery toward the Jenkins Mountain lookout. Unfortunately we did not time it will and did not make it all the way to the lookout but what we saw was absolutely stunning. The privies along the side were quite amusing and we took quite a few pictures. In the five hours we were there we only soar to loan skiers, two skiers from the college doing their work out and another young couple looking like their first time on cross-country skis. If you can go during the week. We will be going back there hopefully next year.

Osceola Tug Hill Ski Center

Reviewed By O1632RWkarens

I have been skiing at Osceola Tug Hill Ski Center for 10-15 years. The trails, which are consistently and expertly groomed, wander through a pristine, serene landscape. There are a variety of trails, from beginner/flat, to advanced/hilly - and ways to alter your trail choice (although you might need to make your own trail - or follow someone else's cut trail for a short distance). Despite a sometimes busy business day, I may have little to no contact with other skiers (usually on the north side), or I can choose a more populated set of trails if I prefer. Trails are almost always groomed for both classic skiing (tracked) and skating - unless conditions dictate otherwise. Hugh is knowledgeable about skis, skiing, and conditions, and is one off the most honest business men I know. He has often suggested a "fix" for whatever problem I'm having that makes him no money - or prevents a sale - but he has also recommended fixes that involve a purchase. I trust him. Period. He even allowed me to use the dryer at his lodge when my water bottle opened up in my bag, soaking my clothes. Anna, his wife, who is usually at the welcome desk, is a helpful and pleasant addition to the business. They have (as of 1/19) a friendly dog and a social cat for those who love animals (or a warning to take meds if you are allergic). The trip is 1 1/4 hour from my house and absolutely worth it to me.
