Nature surrounds you everywhere as you go through Highlands Hammock State Park. After you stop at the ranger station and pay a very modest entrance fee ($3 per person), you drive through the gate and into Florida as it was thousands of years ago. The 3+ mile loop takes you around and through the hammock of swamp, cypress , and oak trees, many of which are 1000 years old. The Cypress Swamp trail is a boardwalk trail that winds it way through the cypress swamp. All types of wildlife can be seen. At the end of the boardwalk, there is a large creek and pond, there are benches to sit and relax and enjoy nature. I was using my mobility scooter and had no issues using the boardwalk. However, at the end, there is a catwalk that crosses the pond, and sadly, the scooter would not be able to go over it, so I had to turn around. The next boardwalk was the Fern Garden trail. Again, no issues with the scooter, but after a short distance, the boardwalk ended and it was just a dirt path. There are other trails, but they are also just dirt paths. It has been a wet summer, so I did not attempt to go down any of those paths, but, should the weather be dry, and the ground hard enough, I believe I could get the scooter down some of the paths, using caution. There is a very nice museum that shows the history of the park, and how the workers lived back in the 1920s and 30s. There are accessible restrooms inside as well. There is a large camping area with full hookups. A picnic area with lots of table is nearby, and there are facilities that can be rented for parties and large gatherings. I would like to return in cooler weather and camp, that would be a nice experience. So, should you find yourself in central Florida, take some time to go to the town of Sebring, and go to Highlands Hammock State Park, a trip back to old Florida.

What an iconic raceway that was also a training base for WWII bomber pilots, then called Hendricks Field. The world famous 12 Hours of Sebring is held here every March and brings the fastest sports cars and best endurance drivers from all over the world. This weekend was the Cadillac Grand Prix organized for the first time ever due to C-19 postponing many other sports car races. Three different races in two days and very exciting. I am looking at returning in November for the rescheduled 12 Hours of Sebring. Visited the gift store for a few great Sebring shirts too! sebringraceway.com

Spent time with friends and decided to see what Sebring had to offer in live theater. Went to see Tennessee Williams play - "Streetcar Named Desire". The stage scenery and talent were excellent. Theater was a very relaxing place to see plays and you have the option to sit at tables at the front of the theater.

This is a really good place to see history from the Navy, Marines, and the Coast Guard from years gone by. There are books, all sorts of uniforms, displays, and the volunteers are retired military. Donations are accepted to help keep the museum running.

Lake Istokpoga is a 26,762.9-acre freshwater lake in Highlands County, Florida. It is fed by two creeks, Arbuckle Creek and Josephine Creek. The oblong-shaped lake is approximately 5 miles wide by 10 miles long. Fishing, Air boat rides and Seeing the locks are a must do!
We live in St. Pete and are doing a Florida staycation for a week in Sebring due to all the travel restrictions right now.. At home or here, we still don't feel comfortable eating out at restaurants whether indoors or outdoors. So every few days we will order curbside delivery from Subway or Panera and take it to a park for an impromptu picnic. We decided to do that today while in Sebring and picked this park as our picnic spot. It was lovely. Quite a few very long picnic tables that could seat 8 - 10 people. Many were out in the open but shaded and then there were two covered pavillions with tables. Quite a few charcoal grilles around the area. Very clean. After lunch we did the boardwalk down to the lake and then walked the dirt trails. What was nice is that 90% of the area is heavily shaded so even though it was 94 degrees in Florida summer weather, it didn't feel that hot. It's not a large park and doesn't have amenities like a playground or other sports areas but still would recommend a visit. Plus, no fee to enter the park.

what a quite and pretty small town. Driving down the streets you will see murals on the buildings. You need to get out of your car to go read the story behing the painting. There are many murals downtown. This is a must if you are in downtown Sebring.
