Museum of the Aleutians

The Museum of the Aleutians is a cultural history institution for the Aleutian Islands and the community of Unalaska. The museum opened its doors in 1999 with the mission to collect, preserve, and research the cultural history and prehistory of the Aleutian Islands region. Through actively growing Unangan, Russian-American, WWII, and local art collections, the museum provides stimulating permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a home to researchers, visitors, and community members.

I read that this was an award winning museum and I can see why. The beautifully crafted exhibits cover a broad range of the area's history and culture. Several videos take you deeper into subjects like the WWII internment and the fishing industry. The admission price of $7 is a good investment for learning about this community. (The gift shop is small but has a nice variety of souvenirs and merchandise).

Very good local library with a bookstall for travellers to buy ex-library books as cheap as 5 for $1. Free wifi with some time limits. Best public wifi on the island. Very nice staff. Donation box on the front counter helps keep the place running.
