Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Originally designed and built in 1891 by Old Tom Morris, the course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine stumbled across it on holiday and re-discovered its remarkable heritage. In 2008 the course was restored using almost the exactly the same techniques as it was built 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be underestimated, even the keenest golfers are challenged by its unique terrain: formed around the naturally occurring grassy 'Machair' dunes unique to the North-West coast of Scotland. Askernish has gained world renown not only for its story as a lost Old Tom Morris course, but also for its delicate integration into the natural environment. It is oft-said that Askernish offers 'golf as it was meant to be', surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of South-Uist it is hard to disagree. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.
Played Askernish mid September with my brother and brother-in-law. We were on a holiday and family research trip covering the Outer Hebrides. Our paternal grandfather was shipped off to Canada by Lady Cathcart. With all the extra room created she hired Old Tom Morris to design Askernish. The day before we played the wind was blowing hard and the rain was coming in sideways. The golf course emailed us and told us no one would be in the clubhouse but they would leave our rental clubs in the maintenance shed. We drove down from North Uust the next morning and were surprised to find the club captain at the clubhouse. Three nice sets of Callaway rental clubs were all set up and ready to go. The captain gave us a few tips and pointed us in the right direction. The sky cleared but the wind was still blowing. Downwind we could take a shot at driving the green on a par 4. Against the wind it was a 6 iron to hit a green 100 yards away. I commented on the 6th hole that the course was an easy walk. Three holes later we were hiking up and down huge sand dunes and working up a sweat. The holes along the ocean are spectacular. Great views south to Barra. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you hit the fairways you will score well. Miss the fairway by a few feet and your ball will disappear in the thick grass. My brother hit a great drive on 12 that must have ended up in a rabbit hole because we couldn't find the ball. Would have played the course again but we ran out of time.

Very large statue of Madonna and Child which is situated at the northern end of South Uist. You can drive up or walk the steep path to the statue. On a clear day the views over North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist are stunning. More prominent signs would be helpful.
