I stopped in Raton for a couple of days in the middle of a 17 day road trip. While there, I spent an afternoon hiking the Ponderosa and Opportunity Trail loop which is about 5 miles. Pleasant walk, not too difficult but has some sections which are a bit steep, especially if you're not used to the altitude. The extra half mile up and back to the top of Black Horse Mesa was worth it. Trail was interesting in that part of the area had been burned in a fire a few years back so you can see how succession is playing out. As pointed out in other reviews, this area is not spectacular but is representative of the area it is in.

Was staying here while teaching a 4H shotgun class. 5 days on-site. This place is huge! 4.5 miles from our classroom to our cabins! Nice shotgun ranges and close to cafeteria! Wonderful firearms museum there, also. Be careful not to run over the Turkey or pronghorn that are everywhere! Elk can also be seen there. Great overall stop! Complete, friendly and instant service on all counts. Great staff and accomodations!! I'd love to go back.

Sondheim and Shakespeare meet on the Santa Fe Trail in the metiulously restored 100 year old Shuler Theater. Like many Midwest pioneers, Two Pigs Productions headed West to strike it rich. Unlike most it has actually done it in a top-notch production of Sondheim's "Into the Woods." A bright and energetic cast of talented young professionals brings out the light and shadow of Sondheim's timely and challenging musical retelling of several well known fairy tales. Still one week to catch a bit of Broadway in New Mexico. Next up "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

We stopped in Solano's to simply look around and wow were we impressed! They had anything and everything you'd want to be an authentic cowboy/girl. We were treated so nice and shown things we didn't know we needed. Wonderful hat bands, chin bands that exceeded anything we'd ever seen before. My husband is seriously contemplating some custom boots as he is hard to fit. There's a tack shop in the back that hand-makes saddles, holsters, knife holders and repairs all leather goods. A definite stop on your Raton trip. We are planning to return next month.

Raton is a small town at the base of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico, which offers extraordinary outdoor adventures and activities such as the Raton Regional Aquatic Center and the Whittington Center. In both cases, Raton out does itself, offering a quality product the surpasses expectation of a small town. Because Raton is located in the high desert of northern New Mexico, the Aquatic Center is fully indoors. It offers a variety of activities and opportunities including swim lessons, slides, various pools for all ages, different games and best of all a climbing wall. The weather inside is consistent (s) so you can enjoy the pool any time without cracking ice. The staff is super helpful and fun. Raton has made a huge investment in the community to offer wonderful opportunities. In an area where economic conditions are difficult, Raton has out done itself.

El Raton is one of the few 'atmospheric' theatres left. In stead of watching a movie in a modern 'box' theatre, watch here, and be amazed by the art deco architecture, the castle theme, and of course the Dolby Digital 3D picture and Dolby 7.1 surround sound! While you are there, try some of the best popcorn you'll ever taste, made right before your eyes in a classic Manley Vista-pop popcorn machine. El Raton is a perfect blend of modern technology with classic styling. An actual experience of going to the movies!

The staff were warm and friendly and the store had the most interesting things. Amazing having a Pawn shop, Antique shop and vast inventory of guns all in one place. Its a one stop shop where you can get something for everyone.
Clean facilities and a welcome rest stop if you are a traveller on the road.
