Panayia Evanyelistria Cathedral and Museums

Drawing thousands of pilgrims during festivals of the Virgin, this place of worship features an icon attributed with healing powers.

If you are in Tinos there is no escaping this iconic church which dominates the town both physically and spiritually. The courtyard is a peaceful area to reflect. The inside of the church itself is very small but was not crowded when I visited in September. The walk up to the church is steep though having seen an elderly woman crawling on hands and knees (there is a carpeted path beside the footpath) I considered my journey rather trivial. For Greeks this is a pilgrimage to their patron saint, for tourists like myself it is a very pleasant way to spend a morning.

Museum of Marble Crafts

The Museum of Marble Crafts, in Pirgos, on the island of Tinos, is a unique example presenting the technology of marble, a material that holds a particular place in the architecture and art of Greece, from antiquity through to the present. The permanent exhibition, which describes the intricate meshing of tools and techniques used in working marble in a detailed and live manner, puts an emphasis on the pre- and proto- industrial Tinos, the most important centre of marble crafts in Modern Greece. In parallel, it highlights the social and economic context that the local workshops evolved in. The permanent exhibition of the Museum of Marble Crafts of Tinos allows you to see first hand an impressive number of authentic objects, such as: Secular, ecclesiastical, funerary and everyday objects made of marble (door lintels, Fountains, family crests, corbels, shrines, mortars, etc.) Clay models and plaster of Paris copies Quarrying, cutting and carving tools Mechanical equipment Archival material Sketches of old marble carvings by master craftsmen (the richest collection in Greece).

Another one of the great museums of Piraeus Bank Cultural Foundation. Extremely well presented items and very educative for young children (and adults).
Do not miss the side exhibition where you can see some Kazantzakis manuscripts!
Overall great place for a family visit, do not miss it if you are in Tinos. Beware , the museum is closed in Tuesdays!

Marble work for purchase and teaching workshop - The gentlemen/family could not be nicer or more hospitable. I recommend highly for artists and collectors as well as visitors looking to understand the process of marble carving. Great works for home decor too such as carved floor tiles and fanlights.

Monastery Agias Pelagias

We visited the monastery during after-noon, four people, three adults and a child. It is a very well reserved and very clean monastery, worth visiting if in Tinos. Wonderful view from the monastery. Be careful to cover up both men and women as no light dresses are accepted.
