Curwood Castle. built in 1922, was the writing studio of James Oliver Curwood, a writer and conservationist. The castle, located on the banks of the Shiawassee River near Curwood's home on Williams Street served as the writer's private studio. James Oliver Curwood, a sportsman and pioneer conservationist, wrote more than 30 tales of courage and daring in the Canadian Northwest. Curwood spent much of his time in the north woods exploring and writing about the natural world he loved so well. Curwood Castle was the writer's dream project, fashioned after a 17th century French chateau. It is built of stucco, slate, copper trim and fieldstone that Curwood himself chose from the nearby farm fields. During Curwood's lifetime, the Castle served as a writing retreat, Hollywood office and the site of fabulous parties. Today it stands as a singular architectural treasure, the legacy of a remarkable life and a reminder of glorious days gone by.
My husband and I visited the Curwood Castle on a discounted day. I believe it was only a dollar to enter. It was fun to visit, but it's a short self-guided tour.

A beautiful spot to enjoy the colors of autumn. This beautiful park just west of the tiny village of Henderson, Mi. (Just north of Owwoso, Mi.) is the perfect spot to enjoy a quiet picnic away from the crowds.
If you look closely in the photo to the left... you will see the fisherman who is gonna be bummed that everyone who reads Tripadvisor is gonna find his secret fishing spot.... sorry :)

I've brought my kids here a few times this past year. The kids love it. It would be nice if they had something for the adults where they could watch their children other than walking besides the inflatables. The kids will sleep well at night after spending a few hours in the bounce houses.
They make it really easy to have your child's birthday party here. You can bring in your own cake.

This Christmas was a great time to visit this village. It has been very popular. The lights were beautiful and its a bit unusual because they are so open to letting you explore everything. The church is booked for years for weddings and they are opening a bicycle shop with real old bikes in it donated by Merilee Lawson. Its a magical place to take your kids.

My friend and I were in town for the Art Walk and had stopped just to pick up some literature and an hour later we left the building. Be sure to see all three floors and step out on the patio area that overlooks the Shiawassee River. Loved the variety and quality of art on display. Would go back again and again as they change or some of their displays monthly.
