The 8 Best Things to Do in Newcomerstown, United States

September 3, 2017 Ying Subia

Newcomerstown is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States, 85 miles (137 km) east-northeast of Columbus. In the late 1770s, this was the largest Delaware Indian village on the Tuscarawas River, with 700 residents. Chief Newcomer (Netawatwes) was the leader of the western Delawares here, and they called the village Gekelmukpechunk. Early French traders and English settlers named the village Newcomerstown after the chief. Soon after the start of the American Revolutionary War, the Delawares moved west to Coshocton, about halfway through what is now the next county.

Rainbow Hills Winery

I was interested in visiting this winery due to it also having a bed&breakfast/rooms available. This is somewhat a secluded location, including a gravel road. Had we been traveling on our motorcycle,we would not have visited. The staff seemed a little surprised to have a number of visitors, even remarking "this would be better if chilled" when I asked to taste their white wines. I was hoping to inquire about and perhaps see a room, but the woman that waited on us hurried off to the back room.
The grounds seemed nice and the water feature was lovely, but no one on staff seemed to be interested in answering questions or promoting their business.

We were staying overnight at a cabin in Amish County and decided to check out Raven's Glenn Winery. We've had the wine before, but have never been to the winery. Upon entering, it is beautiful and well organized. You can taste wine at the tasting bars and buy wine, drink it there or leave. We decided to stay for a bite to eat with a bottle of wine. The wine was good, but we were not too impressed with the food. Granted, we just got an appetizer, but we were somewhat disappointed. Not much for the price. I'd buy the wine again, but not sure I'd eat there again. The view is gorgeous as well.

Pearl Valley Cheese

A great experience and a must-stop. Excellent cheese and very friendly service. Prices are far below what you would pay in Columbus or a larger City. They offer up plenty of samples to help you make your decisions. A difficult task to say the least. The people who work here make the experience that much more pleasant. Their cheese is simply unbelievable. We came home with several pounds including horseradish cheese pepperoni cheese and my favorite aged Swiss. Great ideas for Christmas presents.

This holiday retreat is a lot of bang for your buck! This is the second year we stayed here. We had three families and 5 kids total. There were activities throughout the entire holiday weekend for the kids and parents. The activities included crafts, roll in the zorb ball, archery, guided hikes, swimming, hot tub, family Olympics, face painting, black light party, talent show, Bigfoot scavenger hunt and a DJ to ring in the new year. There was also a bar and restaurant options right on site.

After visiting Historic Schoenbrunn Village we drove to Gnadenhutten Historical Park & Museum. Before walking through the park watch the video in the Museum and see the exhibits of Indian life in Ohio to get a "feel" for the village depicted in the park. The park includes the mass grave of the 90 Christian Indians killed during the final months of the Revolutionary War. Enter the two log buildings (one is the meeting house and the othe a cabin) that commemorate the tragic massacre. Imagine that this village might have looked similar to Schoenbrunn when the missionaries and Christian Indians lived there. Now it stands silent as a reminder of this tragedy.

The wine tasting consisted of tasting 9 different wines, at 50 cents each. The man serving the wine seemed to know what he was talking about and enjoyed being there. The cheese, meat and bread board was very good. Fun atmosphere.

We had been told that we would only like this winery if we like sweet wines....wrong!There are many wines to choose from and I found two very nice drier white wines to love. The gentleman that waited on us was fabulous! Polite, helpful and friendly. The inside of the winery is comfortable, clean and spacious. The view from the deck is relaxing and beautiful. Wish they had evening hours... music outside and a bottle of wine would be so relaxing!

Before parting ways our extended family needed a place to eat, we chose this place close to I-77. The memorilbilia inside was fascinating for all ages to view. We were a rather large group (15) but we had no problem sitting together and choosing from their varied menu. The food was plentiful and excellent; service was quick. We look forward to visiting here again.
