The local community developed this site to shield the working farms and community from tourists.
Kalona was settled by Mennonites and Amish, and the historical village tells their story, as well as the more general one of small-town eastern Iowa. The main building is a Mennonite/Amish museum, and on the property are a number of buildings that have been moved to the site from other areas.
The (largely volunteer) guides are welcoming and enthusiastic to share information. It's a good introduction to the area, and a must-do visit if you have time to spend in Kalona.

If you are a Trekkie you should already have known about this place, if not and you just want a little off the beaten path "sightseeing", why not give this future historical site a try.
The site itself it not very well marked from the street with any signage. The main indication is a brown-ish banner hanging on the lightpost. However, the town of Riverside is small enough that if you just park the car and walk around you will eventually find it.
The site is located on the North side of the street (Hwy 22 is the same as First St) in between a small house like business (51 W. First St) and a regular store-front building.

So so much to look at! Multiple floors and rooms full of items. Shop is full but organized. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.

This museum is combined with the town historical museum and a Star Trek store. Most of the exhibits are not high tech (they have cardboard cutouts so you can take pictures with them) but reminiscing about the many artifacts and talking to the people there is well worth the visit.

Stopped in here right before closing (5pm) on our way back from the Amana Colonies. Since we arrived right at closing, we only had time to sample and purchase some cheese so I don't know if they offer any dairy tours. There was a good selection of cheese and other products and I would recommend the stop if you are in the Kalona area and enjoy cheese.
I hope to write an updated review on the Cheese House the next time I am in Kalona and have more time to spend there.

We ordered the frozen hot cocoa shakes, and they were delicious! They even had mini marshmallows on top of them. While we drank our shakes, the kids watched a lady working in the kitchen covering caramels with chocolate, and we watch fudge making on a TV.
