Having come here over 30 years ago it has changed a bit although the central feature of the ruined chateau with modern replacements for the missing bits remains as fascinating as ever. Enhanced with virtual reality views of the interiors and some very good short explanations of the characters and history involved I thought it was great. So did my 7 year old who rushed ahead to look at each room. Even my wife liked it!

Dedicated to the life and survival of civilians during the Second World War. 1000 m² of exhibition space acquainting you with the remarkable testimonies of those who survived, along with an outstanding collection of items they used in their daily lives and hitherto unseen archive material provided by the Caen Memorial Museum and the inhabitants of Falaise and its surroundings. Tablet computers troughout the museum and an innovating and immersive film offer an unprecedented & interactive experience.
Interesting collection, explaining the effects of war on civilians in English, German and French. Proves there is no such thing as a 'clean' war.

We read about these automata at home and decided to spend our summer in Western France so we could see them. They did not disappoint. An unassuming, sleepy little town. Not many people or vehicles around. Clear sign posts to the place they were displayed. Parking out frint Getting there could not have been easier. Quiet inside. We had the place to ourselves for a while. Then some families came in and it livened up. Stunning shop window displays, made for Parisian department stores each year since the 1800s. Displayed each December then sent back to the factory, where they were stored. The factory closed and some of them ended up here. Just to be clear, these are not just fixed exhibitions for shop windows. They move! Fairy tales. Children&s stories. Santa's workshop. A life size band stand.. No limit to the imagination here. Each display lovingly put together, carefully preserved and chock-full of enchantment. There are a lot of automata here. Manly in shop window style, but a few walk-in exhibits. Excellent use of space. Not crowded, but a thrill every few metres as we moved around. at first, we thought the display space was small, but we still spent over 2 hours, mouths hanging over, watching each display, trying to take photos at just the right angle to catch the movement. Left as the whole town was closing down for lunch. Minimal gift shop. They could make much more of that. Totally enchanting. Would love to go again.
