Australian Kokoda Tours (AKT) was formed in 2006 by Mick O'Malley after he decided to turn his passion for Australian war history into a career telling the Kokoda soldiers' stories to other Australians. AKT is well established, with a high trek success rate due to the pre-trek training and on-trek support provided. Mick is the newly elected President of the Kokoda Tour Operators Association.

The Museum currently has two history exhibitions: The Rise and Fall of Samarai, and Milne Bay's place in WWII: The Battle of Milne Bay 1942. More contemporary displays include paintings & objects created by Milne Bay artists and weavers. The museum's permanent collection includes 40 carvings and 12 story boards from the Malinowski Legacy forum carving project. The museum is not for profit and your donation will help to keep us growing and serving the community

Located on the slopes of Independence Hill, this traditionally designed museum houses an excellent collection of New Guinea art and cultural artifacts.
Impressive collection from all over PNG. Well displayed and cared-for artefacts, excellent display space, great to see PNG staff have laid out some of the display presentations and written the display interpretations. Apparently locally-cooked dishes have been so popular that they are now being sold Mon-Wed lunches! Set on beautiful grounds that is good to see being used for occasional events. When things are more COVID-safe, it would be great to see more of this with COVID measures. It would be good to see the museum opened for even half a day every weekend so that more people can enjoy the collection more easily. It would be super cool to have an artist in residence space and partnerships with other regional museums to enable a couple of rotating exhibitions each year so that PNG can enjoy more things from around the neighbourhood.

For a small museum in a very untouristy town, the JK McCarthy museum was a pleasant surprise. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly and the artifacts fascinating.

Had a beer in this club 30 years ago. Now it sits almost alone in what is left of the old Rabaul. Converted to an excellent museum. You just have to visit this when in Rabaul. I hope this history can be preserved for future generations and that there is a plan to rescue the artifacts if the volcano goes up again.

Not huge, maybe somewhat basic, but great to have available and to feel secure while shopping. The RH Hypermarket anchors the place. It was fun to walk along both sides of each floor and window-shop too, and there is a nice little crafts kiosk at one end of one floor. A post office on the second floor is convenient. Now as others have suggested, this is not on the scale of SM Mega Mall or Festival Walk or Pacific Place. It's a mall for POM residents who have a bit of time, or cash, or both. They were making an obvious effort to keep the area clean and it was interesting to watch an army of cleaners fanning the floor to dry it. If I had more time during my own visit, I would have wanted to try more of the restaurants. It's attached to Hotel Stanley, so convenient for hotel guests who understandably fear leaving hotel grounds. This was a huge "plus" for me. Note for foreign visitors: browse through the Hypermarket, compare prices and points of origin of the products. A real eye-opener.
