August 8, 2021 Deane Carmody

Hollywood beckons to tourists who long for a brush with Tinseltown glamor. Tour movie studios, slip your hands into the famous prints at the TCL Chinese Theatre, or indulge in a celeb sighting at one of LA’s white-hot nightspots. Spot your favorite star while shopping at The Grove, or forget all about the famous eye candy as you take in the iconic artwork at The Getty Center. For a different type of star-gazing, peek through the telescopes at the Griffith Observatory.

It's an unassuming border to the main campus, but Westwood if chock full of wonderful shops, restaurants, and coffee stops in the shadow of a big city urban scape. As you traverse the streets and pathways of Westwood, you start to discover a beautiful campus setting with all the trappings of a "Southern California" environment. Student pedestrian and cycling traffic reflect the academic dedication that is required for success on this campus. The diversions of play spaces, grassy quadrants, party establishments and suburban style entertainment options color the campus with a unique blend of academia, suburbia, and college frivolity. Once you've walked a mile through the streets and college spaces that characterize Westwood, you may find yourself chanting the iconic: "U -- C -- L -- A -- UCLA fight, fight fight" (or "enjoy, enjoy, enjoy")

Venice Canals Walkway

A short walk from the Venice Beach eyesore, the canals provide a very different aspect of the area. Whereas the beach is full of cheap souvenir shops, and a large number of unfortunate folk who are living rough, the canal walks allow you to stroll past lovely homes and watch the ducks and squirrels go about their business. There are several canals and if interested you could easily spend a few hours walking them. A relaxing change.

Chiat-Day Building

It’s a phenomenal piece of public art at the entrance to the Chiat-Day block that in fact it is known colloquially as the Binoculars Building. Unsurprisingly Frank Gehry was the architect and completion was in the early 2000s. Entrance to the car park and for pedestrians is between the lenses.

If you are visiting Hollywood then visiting this cemetery is a must especially if you are interested in the old Hollywood movie stars. Hollywood Boulevard has lost its blind! With the exception of the Chinese theatre! Head fir this cemetery to seek out the final resting place of Hollywood stars, authors, screen writers and composers including Marilyn Monroe, Janet Lee, the Gabor sisters, Dean Martin, Walter Matau, Jack Lemmon, Heather O'Rourke (poltergeist ) and many more. Watch the YouTube videos of a tour to help find resting places easily.

Eames House

We booked the personal tour and indeed it was worth it. This is a unique location (and the last of the original seven sites) which deserve to be preserved for future generations. It’s not perfect - work is ongoing - and you can see the wrinkles and warts but the overall ambience preserved and knowledge of the guides make it something to do. We are interested in post war architecture and this gave us a step change relating to it. You can only read so many books and visit so many sterile museums - to see where the Eames family lived and experimented was the key. You can see many of the items (some really random and weird) which they collected on their travels but which triggered their creative ideas. You can see the place they sat to watch their movies and our guide really brought the scenes to life. It was also great to see some of their experiments which eventually turned into the classics we know today.

Venice Beach Boardwalk

Anything and everything on this famous concrete strip - from hippies to skateboarders, you will see it all here.

The boardwalk is a colourful, liberating, accepting place that we fell head over heels in love with! A must visit for everyone who visits LA! Unlike mentioned in a review below, there is a great restaurant called The Sidewalk right on/in the middle of the boardwalk that we went to twice, it was perfect for people watching! There are so many little eateries on the little roads that lead up to the boardwalk to, just a few steps off the front and there are plenty of fast food outlets with great selections. The scooters are an absolute MUST, $1 to unlock and and just 15 cents per minute of use and you cam leave them anywhere! Since of the best fun we had all holiday. You do get an intermittent smell of cannabis but as cannabis users ourselves it doesnt bother us at all, although it's not as rife or as frequent as some are making out. And it just adds to the atmosphere, vibe and freedom of Venice!
