The 8 Best Sights & Landmarks in Cloudcroft, New Mexico (NM)

November 7, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Cloudcroft is a village in Otero County, New Mexico, and is within the Lincoln National Forest. The population was 674 at the 2010 census. Despite being located in an otherwise arid region, its extremely high elevation (8,600 feet (2,600 m); one of the highest in the U.S.) allows for a relatively mild summer that makes it a popular tourist attraction in West Texas and New Mexico. It was named by Fodor's in 2002 as the Number 3 "Most Overlooked and Underrated Destination Spot." Tourism remains the primary economic driver of the village.

Nichols Ranch and Orchards

Took the kids for the their first time to pick apples off the tree. At first they were not to sure, but when we go there and they saw all the different things they could do they got excited. The staff there is very friendly and so are the dogs. We got a hay ride down to the orchards to pick some apple. Just a reminder that if you are looking for honey crisp apples you will need to go early in the season (end of AUG). We picked all kinds from red delicious, gold delicious, fugi, wine crisp (cooking apples instead of granny) and even got some gala. The kids sure did enjoy it cause we came home with 50lbs of apples. HAHA. They have some kind of harvest year round so take a day off from the techno world and send some time doing something fun outside.

Beautiful and calm drive through the woods. You can see plenty of wildlife. We generally see more wild mustangs out there. We have seen a few elk and a lot of deer. Really nice drive from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft via hwy 244. You will not be disappointed on this drive if you love getting off the beaten track!
