Bei Gang Chao Tian Temple

Reviewed By JindyJohn

Beigang's Chaotien temple is one of the most important Matsu temples in Taiwan and it draws big crowds. Beigang is off the tourist trail, so these crowds are genuine worshippers performing their devotions. They do so in a building that is ornate to a fantastic degree. The roof alone is a masterpiece of ceramic ornament. Illuminated at night, it glistens in peacock hues.

Bei Gang Old Street

Reviewed By JindyJohn

Zhongshan Street connects Chaotien Temple with the red pedestrian Tourist Bridge. It is lined with shops selling traditional Taiwanese foods and artefacts. No upstart coffee shops here, just one convenience store. At the lunar new year, when I visited, it was packed with visitors and car traffic was diverted away from the street and the temple. The atmosphere was busy but not hectic, a good place for families. A barrage of firecrackers made the street disappear in a smoke screen.
