As you would expect, The Mountain State displays rustic charm with dramatic river gorges, large limestone caverns and spectacular mountain views. West Virginia hosts outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers looking for fresh-air activities and serene mountain atmosphere. If stimulating city holidays are your preference, Charleston combines warm hospitality with a lovely riverside location. A family-friendly destination, you’ll discover children’s theatre, river park recreation and popular Bridge Road for shopping and dining. Smaller towns blend outdoor adventure with quaint village atmospheres. Set between the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers, Hinton is an historic rail town filled with turn-of-the-century architecture and a host of water activities at its doorstep – rafting, fishing, kayaking and more. In the heart of West Virginia, Summersville is a “Mountain Water Playground.” Its lakeside location encourages outdoor recreation from swimming and boating to scuba diving and rafting. And history buffs can trace Civil War battles throughout the states historic sites and state parks. Hiking or horseback riding along trails through deep hardwood forests is another family favorite, especially when you stop for a picnic along a clear mountain stream.

We recently returned to an old friend we've frequented many times since the 70s. That friend, Coolfont, and its beautiful views has happily returned. We stayed in a recently redone A-frame cabin. It was comfortable but we had a rough beginning. The road from the lodge to the cabin is really in bad shape. It wouldn't be a problem for a pickup or other 4-wheel vehicle but our low-to-the-ground Civic was hard-pressed to dodge all the holes. An alignment is probably in order after the back-and-forths to the cabin, but we managed to go slow and careful enough to thankfully retain the exhaust system. Upon arrival at the cottage, the central air-conditioning hadn't been plugged in (apparently). The maintenance man thankfully came and said someone had unplugged the compressor (for some reason) and after a couple hours, we had the cabin cooled. It was an unseasonably hot and humid June day. The restaurant is remodeled and looks very much like it did back in its heyday. Though the food was good, it seemed a bit pricey, but the service was friendly, which made up for it. Hopefully, they will offer, at some point, a regular buffet which was what made the old restaurant such a legend. Thanks to Janell and Doug the maintenance guy for your help and the lovely waitresses that were very kind to us as well. We look forward to returning to our long-time friend, cool-Coolfont (albeit with a 4-wheel drive).

An extraordinary place of natural beauty and serenity, our West Virginia mountain golf resort provides the ideal setting for a weekend get-away, family vacation or your four season vacation or retirement home. Nestled high in the West Virginia Alleghenies just 20 minutes from Deep Creek Lake attractions and 1 hour from Morgantown WV, Alpine Lake Resort is set on 2,000 heavily wooded acres with an award winning 18-hole golf course and a pristine 150 acre lake fed by springs and mountain streams as the resort focal point.
My friend booked two nights rooms for our vacation. We were looking forward to kayaking, playing tennis and golfing. The lake was gorgeous and the golf course was inviting. However when we checked the room it was more like motel rooms rather than resort. The lobby, the main building, swimming pool, recreation room does not have the resort style that you’d expect and all looks old, worn out, dilapidated and desperately need serious upgrades. We decided not to stay in the hotel when we opened up the bedroom. Turned out the office was plan to close that wee we check in. So no room service nor restaurant. I’m not sure how’s this establishment was even allowed to open since the closest restaurants are 15 miles away. What if there’s an emergencies? Not gonna try to book this resort again. Not recommended.

Stonewall Resort combines the pristine lake surroundings with all the comforts of home. Here, in the midst of lush, rolling hills and tranquil lake waters, the beautiful Adirondack-style lodge offers a refreshing perspective, state-of-the-art conference facilities and a luxury resort experience. From the resort's own Mtn. Laurel Spa, 374-slip boat marina and award-winning Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course, guests can enjoy a wide range of recreational activities.
We just spent two days there and although it is far too expensive, it is restful. Food at Stillwater’s was better than we’ve had before. Price is way up - amenities way down. Our two main complaints are that they blare music in the evening at pool and fire pit and it compromises the peaceful feeling of the lake, and there was someone there with two small dogs unleashed. The crowd was more elderly than not, and the dogs could have easily tripped someone. Will bite bullet and go back.

I was there in the off season so some of the activities were not operational, but the ones that were open were excellent. The staff was amazing and there were no crowds. The food was superb and the housing cabins were very clean and spacious.

Located amid the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, The Greenbrier is a National Historic Landmark and an award-winning resort that has been welcoming guests since 1778.
This place is very impressive to look at, but for goodness sake, they charge for a second bucket of ice! There are computers to use in the Eisenhower hallway, but no printers, either for the hotel computers or for your private ones. SO DONT PLAN on printing anything while there! We had our Two yr. Old granddaughter here with us while my husband doing business... The playground looked like it came out of the 1970s! A swing was broken! The slide was old metal (hot to sit on) for such a "swanky" place they obviously DON'T CARE about CHILDREN. I was appalled. I will NEVER come back. I could spend this kind of money somewhere else and have a suite with a frige, microwave, sitting area, real desk and computer work area, free ice, and NOT A MOUSE TRAP under the BED! Oh yea, the DOROTHY in your face huge roses everywhere get a little OLD! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! The grounds are beautiful, and the outdoor pool was nice.

Not our first visit, but it was our last. The scenery with the snow was awesome, and the fishing was as expected due to the weather. The service and advice from the fly shop staff was impeccable! However, our cabin (The Ashley) was absolutely awful. The furnace was broken as evidenced by the sign above the thermostat telling us to use the gas fireplace for heat. If not for finding the instructions for lighting the fireplace pilot hidden under the fire box near the wall, we would’ve needed to call for help. Using the fireplace might sound rustic and cozy to you, but it made the loft bedroom unbearably hot and the main floor bedroom uncomfortably cold. Walking on the main floor bathroom tile in bare feet was even worse. But we powered through, even though two smoke detectors clearly had no batteries (one detector high in the main living area was dangling by wires). Then there was the the stove. Not only did it look like it was picked from someone’s trash pile, the “hot surface” light was always on, and the electric burners were all ill-fitted, meaning the pots and pans all sat at a tilt. There were no other options since the restaurant is no longer open. I rely on a CPAP for good sleep, and I had to adapt so I could plug in my machine. The one available outlet in the main floor bedroom had a full power strip (with large power supplies taped to it) plugged in to the top gang of the outlet, and the bottom gang was not working. Fortunately, I carry my own 4-outlet extension cord, which I used to plug into the single working outlet, with the power strip and my CPAP plugged into it. The kitchen area is comprised of roughly two square-feet of counter area for food prep. We moved the coffee maker to the more spacious bathroom counter just to have enough room in the kitchen for dishes to dry. If bathroom counter and floor space is most important, The Ashley is for you! I’m all about roughing it from time to time, but I definitely expect better comfort and safety when paying almost $1,000 for a 3-day stay at what is misleadingly advertised as a “resort”. We’ll stay elsewhere for our annual outings.
