Nearly crossing northern Italy from the Adriatic Sea westward, Emilia-Romagna gets its name from Via Emilia, the Rimini-to-Piacenza ancient Roman road it straddles. With a rich mix of age-old agriculture and modern industry, the region is home to many historic and cultural gems, both in its larger towns like Bologna, Modena and Ravenna, as well as in its many small hilltop villages. Of course, the region’s best offerings also include native culinary wonders like parmigiano cheese and tortellini.

I have stayed at this hotel for two one-week cycling vacation. You cannot find a friendlier and more accommodation staff. They are there to take care of your news, with a smile. The rooms are basic but very comfortable, well maintained, and clean. The bar and patio are the natural greeting places anytime. The kitchen, run by Lena, is excellent, fresh, and tasty with a special surprise each day. The pool is great (not heated) and you are across the street from the lovely Riccione boardwalk and Bagni (beaches). Emiliano and Piero make sure all runs smooth and you have a great stay. With some luck you might even get a surprise saxophone performance from Piero. Enjoy!

When we decided to book our holiday this summer, like many fellow travelers, unfamiliar with the hotel, we chose it purely based on ratings and good reviews mostly in Italian. Unlike what it appears on website, it is definitely not a hotel catering to foreign clients because most staff, although very child friendly, doesn’t speak English. Secondly, its kids club has limited hours and offers activities catering to local guests. I need to say the staff were trying to be nice to our family who seemed to be the only non-Italian family with kids but the language barrier and non-International approach and clientele meant that we felt like an outsider throughout our stay. That’s not the worst part of our experience. The hotel is located in an area with youth holiday homes mixed with abandoned buildings outside the city. It’s very close to the beach, literally one block, but other than a shuttle bus that takes you to the city free every night, there was absolutely nothing around the hotel, except the noise and music penetrated through the thin wall into your ears late into the night every night. The hotel room, albeit clean , offered little space for family. The exterior walls and walls between rooms have such bad sound proof insulation that you hear your neighbors in late nights and early mornings. Thanks God that the air conditioners work well. Still you as parents really feel trapped in a wrong place with nothing, really nothing else to do daily but sunbathing on the beach. The quality of salad and fruit is very questionable. We had to throw away rotten apples, uneatable fruit and salad from time to time, sometimes they have been recycled from a few days before. Therefore one needs to keep his eyes open when food is offered by staff behind the plastic barrier. The sanitary standards are not the same as in back home especially coffee machines that haven’t been properly cleaned for a while. To be fair, I believe this is indeed a good hotel for local guests. What I felt went wrong was that the hotel tried to market itself as an international hotel, which it was obviously not or can be without changing how it operates in principle. It was misleading and set the wrong expectations. I thought hard about writing this review but I feel obligated so as their next guest, you set expectations right and won’t be disappointed as we did.

Third stay at Villa del Mare. This stay was delayed by COVID from 2020. Overall, we still love the hotel, but several aspects were disappointing, and could be easily fixed. Our booking process was challenging due to prior COVID cancellations. It was challenging dealing with the hotel who were not as flexible as we feel they could have been. They were not that empathetic with our circumstances. I felt that it was the managers or owners who were very much driving the inflexibility, rather than the booking staff. Ultimately, we ended feeling very grateful to have a holiday at all, which I am not sure we should have felt having spent so much money originally in 2020. The stay itself was generally very good. The consistently (across all 3 of our visits) excellent aspects are: - the rooms; - the breakfast; - the pool; - the beach (bagno 169); - relaxed feel; - the decor. It was low season (end of May) when we went, so I understand why there were lower staffing levels than we have seen at peak season. That said, there were a few disappointing aspects that need addressing: - pool cleanliness (the pool was not cleaned regularly enough and pool cleaning equipment was left in the pool for days on end); - no bar (the only bar is the separately run rooftop bar that only opens from 19:00 and only serves high-end drinks). It would not take much to open the ground floor bar or extend the opening of the rooftop bar to allow for early evening drinks from 17:00. - spa information (there was insufficient information available at reception on spa treatments and opening times). I was disappointed to see the rooftop pool having to make way in recent times to become more a bar and restaurant (with a view of a pool). I understand the hotel wanting to maximise the value of what is a fantastic view and space, but I feel the pool has been relegated too much. One of the key differentiating features of Villa del Mare over other 4+ star hotels in the area is its pool - I think the owners need to be reminded of this. So overall, the fundamentals of the hotel are still great (even excellent), but several aspects could do with improvement, which I don't think would require much effort.

This was our second Italian / European resort and this time we were ready. There was parking available for our mini-van. The rooms were nice and clean, but no frills as I would have expected in the USA. Our rooms had a balcony complete with a drying line for swim wear at the end of the day. Our stay package included half board and we enjoyed a typical Italian breakfast complete with choices of coffee, tea and/or juice. (I'll have to get better at taking picture) Dinner was also nice. Both buffet but served by the staff, so there was no issue with children (or adults) touching food with their hands. My youngest devoured 3 bowls of mussels on our 2nd night. The only disappointment of the dinner was that there was no dessert. My boys are used to having a sweet to end their dinner and missed it horribly. :-) The beach is a very short walk across a wooded area to the hotel's private beach. Great experience. We love the beach and was able to walk out quite a distance before having to swim. The attendant quickly prepared our assigned spot and the children were off. There were activities for the children here as well as back in the hotel. Bathrooms and an external shower were available for use. I simply cannot say enough about how great the staff was in helping my family get settled and enjoy our stay. The highlight of the hotel has to be the staff. It was their goal for us to enjoy our stay. They barely laughed at my horrible Italian before switching to English. :-) If we are in the are again, we will stay here.
