The Peloponnese (/ˈpɛləpəˌniːz/) or Peloponnesus (/ˌpɛləpəˈniːsəs/; Greek: Πελοπόννησος, Pelopónnēsos) is a peninsula and geographic region in southern Greece. It is separated from the central part of the country by the Isthmus and Gulf of Corinth. During the late Middle Ages and the Ottoman era, the peninsula was known as the Morea (Greek: Μωρέας), a name still in colloquial use in its demotic form (Μωριάς).

Unveiled in 1901 and created by the Greek artist Lazaros Sochos, it’s located in the pleasant eponymous park. It portrays Theodoros Kolokotronis, one of the heroes of the Greek war of independence, commandingly on horseback. Holding the reins in his left hand he points the way forward with his right.

Located at the head of Kon / Nou Palaiologou and directly in front of the modern stadium, this impressive statue offers a good photo opportunity. To the left is a road which takes you to the ruins of the ancient site, worth a visit.
