It’s a vast, wild place where the lions roam at Shumbalala Game Lodge, deep in the Thornybush GameReserve, one of the country’s great tracts of untamed game-viewing.Set as it is in a dry, singeing savanna of Mopane, Acacias and Umbrella thorns, quartered by easterly-flowing rivers densely shrouded in giant figs, fever trees and phoenix palms, the land is an ancient tapestry of natural wonder.Over-head the Loeries call their sharp warning while horn-bills swoop in an ungainly ballet between trees whilst vultures elevate on thermals portending an electric storm. As you push on through the bush it is the serendipity of nature that amazes most as your vehicle skirts art deco zebra, dozy giraffe, bright eyed bush babies, wildebeest (made, it is said, by the committee of left-over parts) and the rest Africa has to offer. It is even more of an adventure when you stumble upon a leopard lazing in the V of a Jackalberry tree or; a hyena giving you a lazy yellow eye in the gathering dusk; a majestic bull elephant crashing its way through the riverine thicket in search of sweet reeds or; a surprise sunrise encounter with a lion pride on the prowl. This is the world of Shumbalala.

Simply the best. Our three nights at Thornybush were magical in every way – far exceeding our expectations. Daniel and John, our guide and tracker, were simply the best. Following tracks and sounds miles off to show us incredible things like a leopard and hyena battle over an impala, a 15 lion kudu feast, and baby lion cubs answering a mothers call. A dream come true. The lodge staff was phenomenal and worked to accommodate my gluten allergy preparing endless muffins, breads and cookies that I could eat! It was pure luxury, and the food exceptional. This was one of the most profound experiences of my life. Pure magic. We wouldn't have traded a second of it. Thornybush is a not to be missed experience and will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

During the rainy season there is a river that runs through the boma area adjacent to the pool. The waterfall can be heard from some of the chalets dur
Picked wrong weekend to go.. had constant rain and load shedding twice a day. Could not do our free gamedrive. We had no option but to stay in our rooms most of the weekend. BUT rooms are clean and food great!

Siviti lodge We stayed for two nights in this wonderful lodge. We had a beautiful, well equipped villa with elephants, buffalos and different kinds of antelopes just below our terraces. During the safaris (two mornings, one afternoon) with Nick (tracker) and Taylor (guide) we learned a lot about the area and the animals. Of the big 5 we missed leopard, but instead we spotted seven rare wild dogs. There were REAL safaris in the bushes! The welcoming service, food and drinks made you feel as if you were in paradise. Many, many thanks to Bri, Otto, Taylor, Nick and the rest of the staff.

Undoubtedly the stars of this stylish lodge were the animals. Our ranger Keegan and his hawk eyed tracker Solly, were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Sunrise coffee surrounded by birdsong , sundowners -skies on fire against the backdrop of the Drakensberg mountains. Our viewings were extraorduinary. Keegan and Solly showed their ability to work as a team and think on their feet. It made all our experiences special even being caught in the drama of an African rainstorm that comes out of nowhere. Adelia and her team made us feel at home at the lodge- We were welcomed with smiles , hot towels, cool drinks. The routine is built around you, so time melts away, at the pool , in your rooms, around the table. The meals were fantastic and the wines world class. This is a haven in which to reset your clock end experience the magnificence of nature in luxury. Glorious. Well worth visiting on Waterbuck is the Canine anti poaching unit, where Darryl and Gino do an incredible job, with their dogs to fight the on going plundering of our national treasure.

This is truly a beautiful lodge situated on the banks of a seasonal river . The decor is modern, Scandinavian with a touch of South African old school, like riempie chairs, and ball and claw mahogany pieces in tones of Khaki, coffee, stone and pale pink hilights . There are 9 free standing tented suites - but these are not tents rather glamorous tented covered solid walled suites . Expected a large pool with massive bed like loungers ; inside the tent is a small lounge , bar area , big net draped bed and a very large bathroom with shower, double basins, enclosed toilet and free standing bath . There is also a wrap around deck with a big comfy sofa, eating area and outside shower . The food that is served is plentiful, fresh and seasonal . You can expect salads , tapas and even designer pizza for lunch and beautiful 3 course plated meals for dinner or a fabulous candle lit buffet in the riverbed . Breakfast are likewise large with many options . If you have any allergies or food issues they are more than accommodating and as some one that doesn’t eat gluten they produced fabulous breads and cakes , etc. The staff are incredibly welcoming and kind , from your butler to your ranger and tracker . The vehicles take 6 max so you will not be squashed when you enjoy your game drive . The property itself is beautiful but it is not as easy to see animals here as for instance Sabi. The rangers and tracker work a lot harder . We did see lions, leopard, elephant , and all the usual suspects plus a lion feeding her lion cubs; lions on a kill and leopard with a kill in a tree .

A wonderful gem in the bush, 4 star, located in the Thornybush Reserve, well known for superb game viewing.
We visited N’kaya lodge for a 4 night stay and had a fantastic time. The hospitality provided by Andre and Lene was second to none. Food, accommodation and facilities were lovely. However the highlights of our stay were the wonderful wildlife sightings. Andre is so knowledgable and along with our brilliant tracker Andreas helped us to see and experience such a lot of life in the bush. I appreciate that nothing is guaranteed but the great work of Andre and Andreas allowed us to see so much including black rhino. Maybe Andre has a 6th sense....he anticipated we’d see 22 giraffes on the way out of the reserve (having not seen many in previous days) and he came incredibly close as we saw 17!
