We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel whilst visiting Portlaoise when taking part in the Gordon Bennett rally. Having the classic car in the underground garage really did ease our minds. Staff at the hotel were very pleasant and helpful. Thank you.

Family break

Reviewed By I5785HLjg

Stayed here for 2 nights in a family room. Check in easy and quick. Room has 2 single and 1 double bed. Room very clean. Reception staff lovely. Housekeeping lovely. WiFi in room not good. Would connect and have full signal then have no signal. Constantly like this. Beds very comfortable. We had bed and breakfast. Breakfast lovely, large range to choose from and my children happy. Needed water late at night, went to reception and they where happy to help. Went to celebrate my 40th birthday. Hotel left a bottle of secco and chocolates in room. Staff left 2 juice bottles and chocolate lollies in room for my children when we where out and they where delighted with the surprise on our return. Very nice touch. I wanted to relax the weekend and first night was great, second night no sleep due to noise from function going on. Things like this never bother me but honestly was so loud. So feel second night in hotel was wasted really. Was exhausted the next day. Swimming pool was spotless and children loved it to.

good stay would use this hotel again

Stayed just one night in a family room while visiting family in the area. Check in was quick and efficient. My husband was unable to make the visit on the day so reception took €12...the price of breakfast off the room rate. The room was a good size with a double and 2 single beds. Shower was good with plenty of hot water. There was quite a bit of noise from another room across the hall that night but not the hotels fault. We didnt use the pool on this occasion. We had some drinks at the bar in the evening. All staff were friendly. Had a problem with the vending machine that night when i went to get water from it before bed. It took my money twice but didnt give me the water. Told the guy at the desk and he rang the bar to give me 2 bottles of water no problem. Breakfast the next morning was really good for a chain hotel... the hot food was hot and well cooked and there was everything on offer that you could want. Overall I was happy with the hotel and although I normally stay in the midland park hotel when i visit portloise I will definiately stay at the maldron again in the future.

Disappointed

Reviewed By BentOutOfShape

We've rarely experienced such a discrepancy between the TA ratings and the reality. Ok staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and it is well located. But the old fashioned shower was impossible to operate properly and safely. We almost burned the skin on our backs as you'd either get a bit of cold water or a flush of hot water. We heard others having the same problem. We mentioned this to the staff and they said they'll call the plumber in. I'd expect this kind of issues to be dealt with beforehand. And then the breakfast. Salmon that had gotten dark and just wasn't tasty. Eggs that had been cooked grainy. Pan toasted bread dripping with rancid tasting butter. The only positive was the bacon.

No return visit planned

Both myself & my relative were very disappointed with our meal. Waste of time & money. Staff checked on us many times probably waiting to see if we would complain. We didn't see the point of so doing. We didn't want any more food & knew we wouldn't get our money back.

Quiet, rural and friendly

My hubby and I enjoyed a night at Mahers B&B which is in a beautiful rural and quiet location. Situated at the bottom of a long driveway, it is a spacious family home renovated into a guest house with adequate private parking amid lovely spacious garden grounds as well as a garden nursery owned by a family member. The room was clean and comfortable with a large modern ensuite and we had a nice evening sat outside enjoying the sun and a few glasses of wine! The hosts were friendly and welcoming and were able to provide plenty of information as to where to eat and nearby places. The cooked breakfast was delicious and made to order, 1 cooked breakfast is included in the price and the other is subject to an additional €10. Would definitely recommend!
