Far up in the northernmost stretch of Norway—even further North than the Arctic Circle—lies Kirkenes. As you might imagine, there’s plenty to do in the winter months. Ride a husky-drawn sled under the splendor of the Northern Lights. Say hi to the reindeer at a wildlife preserve or go on an ice fishing expedition. Enjoy a succulent meal of King crab and cap it all off with an ice-cold shot of vodka at the Snowhotel.

Thon Hotel Kirkenes is a new and modern hotel located by the sea in Kirkenes. The city center is a 5 minute walk away with small shops, cafes and restaurants. The hotel has a restaurant, bar, conference area and outdoor terrace with fantastic views. The restaurant 69’north is specialized in local food such as king crab, reindeer and salmon.
This hotel is really excellent with brilliant breakfast, delicious dinner and a lovely location. Also they have superb staff. It is simply perfect if you are going on the Coastal Voyage south and need a stopover the night before. The only downside is that Kirkenes, although an interesting place for a brief visit with a pretty savage WW2 history, is really not a holiday destination so I wouldn’t come here for a week.

Welcome to Winter Wonderland! 20 dreamlike rooms uniquely carved by master ice sculptors from around the world. Enjoy an unforgettable dinner and a night cap in the ice bar. Sleep safely and warm in thermal sleeping bags, in complete arctic stillness. Our snow hotel is open 20.12-20.04. Our Gamme cabins are open all year round. Inspired by the traditional Lapland hunting and fishing hut “gamme” found in the Sami areas of the Arctic. All cabins are equipped as small jewels - air conditioning, underfloor heating, bathroom with Aurora wall. Be sure to visit our Winter Park: our reindeer, dogyard with its 200 huskies. Stop by Gabba Cafe for lunch. Prebook and enjoy a 3 course dinner in the magnificent Laven restaurant. Last but not least, visit the surreal Snowhotel. We also arrange northern lights tours, snowmobile safaris, ice fishing and snowshoe walking tours, the infamous Kirkenes King Crab Safari and numerous Husky activities.
Staying at the Snowhotel is such an incredibly unique experience! I highly recommend it! The staff are amazing and make your experience super personalized. I stayed one night in an ice room and one night in a cabin! The dogsledding tour was so much fun… same with the king crabs (I don’t think I have ever tasted crabs that good in my life)! The cabin was beautiful with an awesome view and super clean. The ice room has shared facilities in the main building just s short walk away from the ice area (it is attached to the the ice hotel so you don’t have to walk outside). They give you a sheet and a sleeping bag and I slept 8+ hours and never felt cold! Breakfast and dinner are provided and the food was excellent! If you are looking for a super unique experience it is definitely worth the trip!

Rooms are simple but clean, that is all what I need and whay I expect from a low budget hotel. It is in a good position nearby the shopping center and restaurants (the hotel has also a restaurant). What I really appreciate is the kindness of the staff. They were really nice and welcoming!

Accommodation just outside Kirkenes. Sollia Gjestegard is situated next to the Russian border, only 20 minutes from Kirkenes. Good standard cabins and double rooms in nature surroundings. Mini kitchen in each unit, included cooking equippent. We also offer half- or full pension. Local homemade food. We have a relax area with outdoor jacuzzi and sauna with a nice view to Russia. Our Gapahuken Restaurant offers local specialities and it opens up to a large terrace with panoramic lake views. Open for ala carte from June to August. Rest of the year open for groups and guest staying at Sollia Gjestegård at request only.
Unfortunately the Sollia lodge went bankrupt the first week of March. We only found out a day before we would check in, so we had to find another hotel, which we luckily did. It’s a pity. Seemed to be a nice place.

The location is the only great place - just in the center of Kirkines and literally next door to the taxi service. Overall we stayed there just 6 hours waiting for our late evening flight after we disembarked from Hurtigruten and this place served the needs we had: leave the luggage while we had a walk in the town, had some short nap and have access to bathroom. The check-in and out was pretty quick and hassle free. Overall it was ok for couple of hours, but I would not stay there overnight. We arrived a little earlier and we were given a choice of a room with shared bathroom immediately or our room with en-suite bathroom. As we stayed only for 6 hours overall (during the day) we decided it would be fine to get the available room. However, we found the shared bathroom to be rather dirty and on another floor. The common room was full of people loudly speaking, warming food, etc. The room was tiny, but it was ok for us. Overall it felt a hostel rather than a hotel.

We stayed here and it was not nice at all. First they charged our credit card without explanation. Then we were left on our own. There was nobody at reception, breakfast was a plastic plate by the door under the snow (we did not see it until the snow had melted) and at night there was a blackout and that lasted several hours. Nobody came to check if we were okay, or to bring candles. We don’t mind paying money for a nice hotel, but this is a rip-off.
