I have visted the Hotel Finkenberg every year for the last 10 years either prior to or after attending a motor racing event at the Nurburgring Circuit (25 minute drive away). The hotel is located in a quiet location just 5 minutes walk from the centre of the very pretty village of Blankenheim. The hotel has a large number of rooms spread over 2 floors (plus it has one room on the ground floor) and a separate cottage style building as well. The hotel is truly a family affair with Giselle (sorry if i've spelt that wrong) running the front of house and bar, husband Theo is the chef and son Theo runs the sports bar on the ground floor. The main hotel is decorated in avery traditional German style with lots of wooden features. There is a long bar area with alcove style seating, an adjoing restaurant area and a separate function room. The sports bar has an open seating area, two 10 pin bowling lanes and a skittle alley. You dont hear any noise from the sports bar in the hotel rooms. The rooms are nicely furnished and all have ensuite toilets, showers and / or bath. The food is fantastic with the most amazing steaks I have ever tasted. For the beer lovers there is Bitburger on draught, with Weissbier, Dunkel Weiss and Kolsch available in bottles. The hotel is situated within easy driving of Cologne (Koln) which is also easily reached via train, Nurburgring race circuit and the Mosel. Or you could just drive around the area and marvel at the fantastic scenery. I dont need to be asked if I would stay here again as i'm already booked in for a visit next May.

After a tour we called it a day while being in Blankenheim, chose this hotel at random and discovered that it's excellent considering the low price. Likes: + Friendly personnel. + Good beds. + Quiet rooms. + Good Internet access - at no cost. + Large TV set. + Excellent location with a beautiful view on the old town and the castle. + Free parking. Areas for improvement: - No safe deposit box. - Just one power outlet at the desk. - No reading light except some small bed lamps. If you want to visit this area, e.g. because you want to explore the Eifel or visit the Nürnburgring, I can strongly recommend this hotel. The hotel has a pool, but I didn't check it.

Th caveat to this review is that everywhere other than the most basic budget hotels seems to be incredibly expensive in Cologne. And if you want something close to the centre and with parking, well it's going to cost. So the price of over £200 for one night (once parking and city taxes were added in) was the 'going rate' but could never be described as good value. The arrival was a bit of a performance, having to unload the car on a very busy city street before parking the car close by in a private underground car park. Street parking was available but also at a price and it didn't look particularly secure. The room was very big and comfortable, with comfortable furnishing and certainly not at all 'budget' - in fact I thought it to be quite high quality. However, our room was on the front and therefore a bit noisy. The rest of the hotel was very individually-styled in quite a traditional way, with a nice cosy bar area. Breakfast was 'functional' but just about OK, in a nice dining room rather than the normal breakfast 'canteen' beloved by many hotels. The hotel staff were polite, formal and correct, but not especially warm. Although in the city, the location of the hotel was a good twenty minutes walk from the Cathedral and although we found some places to eat near to the hotel, we felt we had perhaps missed out on the main highlights of Cologne city centre. Overall a nice enough hotel, but pricey and a bit away from the action of the city.

Friendly atmosphere. The bedroom was very good, spacious und clean. The price was very friendly. The restaurant gave a simpel dinner. Which is good, when you are just hungry and you want to go early to your bed. If you really want to experience a good evening dinner, you should first ask the owner if some sort of special can be arranged. Otherwise: take the car and eat somewhere else in the region. In Winter there is nothing to do around the hotel. In summer there is a nice terrace and evening sunsets
