The 8 Best Hop-On Hop-Off Tours in Sorrento, Campania

July 29, 2021 Agatha Simes

Land of Mermaids. Land of Orange and Lemon Groves. Land of Colors. This small city in Campania has earned a plethora of alluring names. Famed for its sea cliffs, the town's steep slopes look out over azure waters to Ischia, Capri and the Bay of Naples. The birthplace of Limoncello liqueur offers some good diving, great sea fishing, boat cruises and appetizing restaurants. Excellent hiking trails cross the peninsula. Rent a car or take a taxi if the steep streets look too intimidating.

The territory of Sorrento includes Head of Sorrento, where there is the "Baths of Queen Giovanna" and the remains of a Roman Villa, which for a long time were erroneously identified with those of the villa of Pollius Felix, Pozzuoli. Since the villa was built around a small bay that is completely surrounded by rock, with the sea entering through a natural opening. The name "Baths of Queen Giovanna" dates back to the traditional tradition according to which Giovanna II of Durres (1373-1435) Queen of Naples, would like to entertain her in the waters of the beautiful natural swimming pool.

The excursion starts from Sorrento and continues along the coast of Massa Lubrense to Punta Campanella, the extreme edge of the Sorrento peninsula. From here the landscape that follows is characterized by bays, caves and small pristine beaches, far from mass tourist circuits. Before reaching Positano, you cannot miss a stop in the bay of Nerano. You reach Positano (stop 1 hour). The arrangement of the houses gives the impression of being perpetually poised before sliding into the sea. Marina Grande is the main beach of Positano: a postcard setting and a cosmopolitan presence, facing the Li Galli islands. After 40 minutes of navigation, we arrive in Capri. The island of Capri (stop 3 hours), the pearl of the Gulf of Naples, is one of the most renowned and sought-after tourist destinations of world tourism. The tour of the island is perhaps the best way to quickly appreciate the nature and landscape views of Capri.

Good trip around the Island of Capri. This is the sort of trip to take if you just want a lazy day of sailing with a little exploration of the Island. The boat was pretty small and there were only about 12 of us on it. The Captain, Tony, was very nice but didnt really say much about the 'Highlights' of the tour. The caves are a complete let down, there's not really much to see, and are really over-hyped. We moored in Marina Piccola and got a bus into the main town centre, where there is not that much to see, but we had a nice walk and explore. A good thing about it was they dropped us all off at our hotels at the end. I have been on quite a few boat trips on various holidays and usually they pick you up from hotel but dump you in the harbour at the end of the trip - so 5 stars to the company for that!!! Overall it was a nice day's boating if you just want to relax a little.

We have been up a few volcanoes but none quite as dramatic as Mount Vesuvius , you do need some comfortable and robust footwear as the pathway to the caldera is as you can imagine loose volcanic rock and powder but after about 20/30 mins walk you do reach the top and it is stunning ! Not only looking into the caldera but the views over Naples , Sorrento peninsula and the Island of Capri. During our visit Vesuvius was smoking although we were told this does not usually happen.... so you are stood there and 40km below is the magma... makes you think right ? There are several gift shops / cafes on the way up / down so you can grab a drink etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit but a note of caution , initially we were going to go by ourselves but decided to book a guided tour inc Pompeii and are glad we did as you now have to pre book entry tickets online ( we thought you could pay on entry ) and trust there is no phone signal up there... so many people trying to buy online without success and also visitor numbers are restricted so if you plan to visit then arrange a few days in advance. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending a visit to Mt Vesuvius
